Bet you was playing liquid all night, I would of been the same...
If your referring to being a mobile disco type dj then i think you need to play requests if possible as it'l more than likely be at a wedding etc....
..If your a dj at a specialist event be it dubshit or dnb etc then i think you should ignore the requests as you should have been booked because of the way you mix, your selection and execution....If we play what the requesters request we may as well be robots and press the repeat button...personally i tell em to fuck off im the selector not you...plus i dont think mr.happy mixes well with any of my spearhead tunes lol
One point tho is.....if your playing at an event and the crowd can get close enough to chat to the dj there is something wrong, i mean some booths are small and the crowd can be close enough to shake hands etc but not to be able to whisper in the djs ear....when im playing out i like to have 110% concerntration on the mix....I make sure the dj area is clear of anyone that dont need to be there, the last thing you want is people fucking about with wires, spilling drinks, talking and shouting around you while mixing and getting accustomed to the mixer (if you dont know it already that is).
look at it this way.....At big events can you get close enough to randal, hype or andy to ask to play something.....they'll just say yeah yeah mate...and then carry on playing what they want......in fact i remember getting behind the booth at one raindance at Bagleys and trying to say something to one of the Rat pack and he went nuts, the security told us to fuck off back to the dance floor
where i mix at local to me. the DJ booth is right in the mix of the crowed. Had people spin back tunes mid mix. try and touch shit.. iv come to expect it when playing there. The vibe is always well good and rowdy though so i just go with it. Occasionally i have told people to fuck off though. its a chellenging set up lets put it that way!
music should be so loud the dj cant hear requests imo
The only thing he should be able to understand is the synchronized lip read of the crowd all saying "fuck off" in unison as he drops the gulliest of the gull
haha two of my mates had never been to a rave before and were very confused as to why I was yelling "fuck off" in front of the DJ booth, they tried pulling me away... they didnt understand
