If your referring to being a mobile disco type dj then i think you need to play requests if possible as it'l more than likely be at a wedding etc....

..If your a dj at a specialist event be it dubshit or dnb etc then i think you should ignore the requests as you should have been booked because of the way you mix, your selection and execution....If we play what the requesters request we may as well be robots and press the repeat button...personally i tell em to fuck off im the selector not you...plus i dont think mr.happy mixes well with any of my spearhead tunes lol

One point tho is.....if your playing at an event and the crowd can get close enough to chat to the dj there is something wrong, i mean some booths are small and the crowd can be close enough to shake hands etc but not to be able to whisper in the djs ear....when im playing out i like to have 110% concerntration on the mix....I make sure the dj area is clear of anyone that dont need to be there, the last thing you want is people fucking about with wires, spilling drinks, talking and shouting around you while mixing and getting accustomed to the mixer (if you dont know it already that is).

look at it this way.....At big events can you get close enough to randal, hype or andy to ask to play something.....they'll just say yeah yeah mate...and then carry on playing what they want......in fact i remember getting behind the booth at one raindance at Bagleys and trying to say something to one of the Rat pack and he went nuts, the security told us to fuck off back to the dance floor

where i mix at local to me. the DJ booth is right in the mix of the crowed. Had people spin back tunes mid mix. try and touch shit.. iv come to expect it when playing there. The vibe is always well good and rowdy though so i just go with it. Occasionally i have told people to fuck off though. its a chellenging set up lets put it that way!

nothing fills me with blind murderous rage quicker than when someone, usually a women, touches the record/jog wheel. as for requests if i like the tune ill try to play it, only if its going to be a good mix though, if the mix doesnt call for that particular tune then im not doing an average mix to quickly play the tune they want.

People should know when they go out that they are going out to hear some music (not pick the music) and dance. If they want to hear a specific song they can sit at home on iTunes or YouTube while they cry that their friends left them to have a good time at the club

The only time ive ever really requested was at a cozy local night when Jeryl from cutline was playing room 2. I requested cloudburn by feed me, I knew it was close in key to the tunes he was playing and he played it bless him, went down a storm.
Personally when ive played out i had one person ask me to play killers don't die so many times, i got the record out and placed it in his hands and went back to mixing.

It all depends on the circumstances. If you know the DJ playing also loves the tune and its quite an intimate setting then why not. But i cant be doing with people handing mc's their phone on which they have written 'mr happy' as the DJ is on some large stage and probs doesn't give a flying fuck.

I requested a tune once and it was met with approval and played, so nerr. The first and I think only house party I played I had a guy asking for the Worzles. I had to keep telling him "In a minute" til his mates dragged him out of the room lol

fairplay,

imo - just let the DJ do his thing, requests always seem a bit off to me

music should be so loud the dj cant hear requests imo :)
The only thing he should be able to understand is the synchronized lip read of the crowd all saying "fuck off" in unison as he drops the gulliest of the gull

haha two of my mates had never been to a rave before and were very confused as to why I was yelling "fuck off" in front of the DJ booth, they tried pulling me away... they didnt understand :(

Should of grabbed one of them by the throat and yelled it in his face. That would of broke him in nicely

best was i had a gig new years some bird come up to me and said 'Can you play some music we like' i was polite and said sorry i dont take requests, 5 mins later same thing with her boyfriend 'Can you play'.. i said luv i stopp you there fuck off boyfriend looked liked he wanted to punch me, then all my boys walk in from the smoking area, didnt see him again all night hah!
