Just two weeks remain until London’s biggest underground bass fuelled New Year’s Eve showcase is back at Shoreditch’s Hearn Street Car Park. It’s the return of Urban Nerds NYE!
For five years Urban Nerds have pioneered a multi-genre concept amalgamating a plethora of underground, bass orientated sounds, taking dubstep, electro, garage, grime and everything in between to some of London’s most impressive, mind blowing warehouse locations. NYE has become their flagship show and after three sell-out years the Nerds return with BassLaced with their most powerful line-up yet!
This year Urban Nerds join forces with BassLaced, another of the UK’s finest underground club brands that has spent the last three years bringing jaw-dropping headliners to Nottingham with a slew of acts from Skream, Benga, Caspa, David Rodigan and P Money to the deeper tones of Roska, Ben UFO, Midland, Pangaea and Starkey, to name a few! After a year of bringing their mouth watering line-ups to London’s Cable club, Urban Nerds are proud to bring the BassLaced crew to their first ever warehouse exploration, teaming up to build the biggest Nerds NYE line-up to date!
This year is headed up by an extremely special VS showcase as two of 2011’s most UK influential labels go head-to-head! It’s Swamp81 VS Numbers, bringing with them their respective label bosses in the form of Loefah and Jackmaster alongside some of their most prolific artists.
Together with Digital Mystikz (Mala & Coki) Loefah set-up DMZ, the globally renounced dubstep night and label that along with FWD>> played a hugely important role in spearheading the sound. A pioneer in the dubstep field in his own right, Loefah established the Swamp81 label in 2009, building on dub roots to forge a new house inspired sound that looks to classic four-to-the-floor, acid and 808 incarnations with a bass backbone. The result is the unique Swamp81 sound that’s paved the way for some of the biggest bass anthems of the past two years, ‘Sicko Cell’, ‘Foot Crab’, ‘Work Them’ and ‘Swims’ all in check! Addison Groove, Joy Orbison, Pearson Sound, Skream, The Bug and Falty DL have all pressed tunes on Swamp81, making the label nothing less than s**t hot! This New Year’s Eve Loefah is joined by Boddika, one half of the boundary pushing Instra:Mental and crafter of some quality Swamp81 output on the tech house, electro, and even 90s dance inspired acidic ‘Electron’ and ‘2727’ plus the massive ‘Soul What’. Also on hand for NYE, Bristol’s Pinch, the Tectonic Recordings founder who’s contributed massively to the dubstep sound over the years, including his own releases for the likes of Planet Mu. On hosting duties, the dark subtle vocals of Swamp81’s very own Chunky, a regular feature on the crew’s monthly Rinse FM show.
On one of the most exciting label clashes of the year, Glaswegian label Numbers go head-to-head with Swamp81! Formed of three of the city’s most cutting edge labels, they’ve played a part in the rise of Rustie and Hudson Mohawke, two of the most exciting producers in underground dance today. The likes of Jamie XX and Mosca have released with them and head honcho Jackmaster has garnered a tremendous following and respect from clubbers and DJs alike. A true DJ’s DJ, his affinity with the craft has seen him mix a prestigious Fabriclive compilation, secure a coveted Rinse FM residency, become part of the Red Bull Music Academy Alumni and recently release a mix for global electronic vanguards, Resident Advisor. As if not enough, New Year’s Eve sees the Numbers boss play back-to-back with Rinse FM’s Oneman, another DJ who’s risen in the ranks riding on technical skill alone and a shameless love of genre crossing sets that have made people stand up and take notice. He’s influenced scenes with his ability to re-invent the way we hear dubstep, garage, 2-step, grime and funky, throwing in house and even disco elements to carve the Oneman sound, without ever releasing a record and that’s no mean feat.
They’re joined by Deadboy, the house and garage inspired producer whose ‘If You Want Me’ defined his sound and smashed clubland in 2012, where the seamless re-working of R’n’B inspired vocals sit over catchy snares, classic house inspired beats and of course, a healthy bass presence. Also on hand for the Numbers camp, the live electro, hip-hop and dance fusions of Redinho, whose ‘Edge Off’ EP encompassing the massive ‘Power Look’ dropped at the start of the year, taking him from strength to strength. Redinho’s ‘Stay Together’ has just dropped, a cerebral, beautifully built track that works in stunning piano chords and vocal melodies, marking Numbers’ last release of the year. Last but by no means least, respected Numbers co-founder Spencer joins the crew, a brilliant DJ in his own right, known for eclectic house, hip-hop, dubstep and techno influenced sets. Dig up the FACT mix he dropped in 2010 and you won’t be disappointed.
Meanwhile, on another thunderous Funktion 1 system this New Year’s Eve, complementing the deeper musical journey presented by Swamp & Numbers is one of the most respected DJs and producers in the game, Urban Nerds favourite, Zinc! The Bingo Beats boss, Rinse FM resident and all-round bass brain has become known for his unique house hybrid, an amalgamation of deep and funky led beats infused with dark jungle and dubstep influenced basslines, blended with tremendous vigour on club anthems like 'Blunt Edge', 'Nu Sound' and the massive Ms Dynamite collaboration, 'Wile Out'. With DJ bookings across the globe, a seminal BBC Radio 1 Essential mix and a truly epic back catalogue that includes UK Garage crossover and scene defining smash, '138 Trek', his huge early contributions to the jungle and d&b scenes plus the never ending ability to second guess the next big sound in dance and re-invent whole genres ahead of anyone else make Zinc a truly special selector.
Having remained at the forefront of the new breed of UK bass culture, Redlight navigates the unnamed airspace between dubstep, house and breakbeats with an ever expanding list of hits that includes ‘What You Talking About’, the massive tune that saw him link-up with Ms Dynamite. As if releases with Shy FX’s Digital Soundboy label weren’t enough, he’s joined Chase & Status’ MTA Records, with the forthcoming ‘Get Out My Head’ set to blow early 2012! As ever, Dread MC is on hand for hosting duties to keep the energy up and the vibes rolling.
Rounding off the bass selection are BassLaced favourites Subscape, Mensah and Dismantle, joined by respective Urban Nerds and BassLaced residents, Rattus Rattus, Klose One and Jack Swift, with the mighty MC AD on hosting duties.
Subscape joined Caspa’s acclaimed Dub Police label in 2008 and has moved from strength to strength ever since, receiving support from the likes of Rusko and Annie Mac and playing across Europe, including of course Dub Police’s prestigious nights at Fabric.
Another solid Bristol export, 2010 saw Mensah rise up following the release of debut EP ‘Untitled Future Funk’ the track ‘Pulse 80s’ leading to scene wide support from the likes of Skream and Joker and a BBC Radio 1Xtra residency on the MistaJam show, alongside guest mixes for Radio 1 and Rinse FM. Now firmly part of Jakes’ respected H.E.N.C.H. label and following remix duties for the likes of Example, Skepta and Ghostface Killah, Mensah is on fire.
