Snares.. How hard can it be?

lostnthesound, thanks for the tips. Really helpful :)

And logikz.. Im just using cowbell as an all around sample. Works for kick, snare, hats whatever. Made some sweet bass patches of it as well, my next track is going to be dope!

Glad I could help.

Universal cowbell drum kit FTW.

Cheers.

fuck that...real men plug a 20" frying pan and a voice recorder up there arse, then get arrested for raping a wild horse, then whilst in the cell remove said items and smash them against the wall.......should get a nice sound and echo from the empty cell....dont forget to load the batteries into the recorder tho

Comment of the year. +1, would do +100 rep if possible.

Record yourself beating off, makes pretty floppy snare. On a serious note: layering, layer vengeance snares, you'll get close.

Okay, I was half right. It's called "Halph Price - Snare Pack" and god knows where I found this pack but I just zipped up the folder I extracted ages ago and uploaded it. 82 snare sounds to have a play around with.

Let me know if it's useful and enjoy!

Sweet mate! I'm downloading now, will have a play around with them tomorrow :D

Update: there was some nice hits in there, not overly processed like most samples you usually find. This will be great!

Glad to hear they hit the mark, guys. I've noticed recently that layering a snare with a clap can make some quite catchy snare sounds as well, so it's worth messing around with a few samples and EQing them properly.

I used to work for a Kenton, a nich music tech manufacturer, many years ago and the boss there gave me a ton of music magazine cover discs with loads of samples. I've been through most and got some great packs but there are still plenty to go through, as you can see.

How i process my snares is i usually find a good sample that bumps around 200hz then another sample with a punchy transient and slap this http://www.schaack-audio.com/transientshaper.html on him. Using that transient shaper on the snare makes that shit POP out of the speakers. Then putting it on the entire drum buss wil have your mix goin bannanas. Its really helped me a bunch and i think it could help you out a lot. If you don't wanna blow 60 bucks on that plug in (its worth every penny though trust me) you could go with this free transient shaper. http://www.fluxhome.com/products/freewares/bittersweet2
peace. :)

Never really used a transient shaper before, I've heard about the bittersweet one before. I'ma try it out and see if I can work something cool out with it!

Cheers for the tip!

Another +1 for the Shaack transient shaper, upped the drive to the first notch is a handy trick, it basically gives you 2-3db of headroom, without affecting the sound, and the release can really craft some snappy snares!

Punchy snares:
1.Good sample
2.Eq/Saturation
3.Parallel compression
4.Fast attack of course,short decay
5.Layer white noise for tail
6.PUNCHY SNARE

Jimpa, why do you have a gif in your sig from a old finnish comedy series "kummeli"? I didn't even know anyone knew it existed.

i second the snare pain. i think logic already covered it though. i guess ill be re-evaluating my life now.
