Movement @ Bar Rhumba, London 8/8/2002
The first time Id been to this venue in about 2 years, and upon arrival I was surprised to see the bottom half of the club had been sectioned off, and decks hab been set up near the bar. Making for a more personal touch, a few people had already gathered around the decks, and as I arrived Drift was just finishing up and handing over to JFB.
Some interesting scratching and tricks got the crowd warmed up, and by the time he dropped Ram's huge 'Huggy Bear' a large roar signalled the crowds appreciation. Just after 11, JFB left a tune playing on the deck, took his records and disappeared! All was revealed moments later tho, as the barrier closing off the rest of the club was brought down, and the masses swarmed into the bottom end. High Contrast's 'No Soul' rmx got things back underway, however we were all disappointed when JFB started playing pretty much exactly the same set as he had been for the last 45 minutes! He even repeated his little trick of teasing 'Grimey' over Calibre's 'Fire & Water', but by this time GQ had arrived and was proceeding to work everbody into a frenzy!
Soon after midnight, Mr. V, Brian G stepped up and took control opening with a nasty little dub that got an instant rewind! As most of you know, when you go and see Brian, your gonna be hearing a lot of tunes for the first time, and tonight was no exception!!! Better mixing than usual, plus the aforementioned dubs kept the crowd entertained, while GQ seemed to be having as good a time as anyone else! Soon after he drew out a silky little gem Id not heard before with a vocal whispering 'Puerto Rico' throughout - definately one to watch out for!!! By this point Darrison had also arrived and proceeded to spout his usual Sacre Bleu/Millenium Wheel nonsense, giving GQ a bit of a breather! As the 2 o'clock hour approached it became increasingly clear that tonight's headliner, Randall, was going to be a no-show, but with a set as hard and mean as Brian's, I doubt many people even even noticed!
Taking over for the last set of the night, was Brian's old friend Donovan Smith. Unfortunately, after Brians fine selection of dubs, Donovans opener of 'Valve Sound' seemed to put some of the dnb trainspotters off, and the dancefloor seemed to empty a little but then again it was nearing closing time. Donovan followed up with some recent smashers such as the incredible 'Deadline' vip and 'The Mexican' which kept the remaining ravers happy right until the very end.
Tonight was the first night Id reached Movement in far too long, and anyone who hasnt been yet has to get down there fast! Next week they got BC, and the following week you get Swift and Wildchild, and with residents such as Ray Keith, Brian G and Ruffstuff, you got no excuses!!!
