DJ Shiva

For 13 years, Indianapolis techno mainstay DJ Shiva has brought a multitude of techno flavors to dancefloors across the US. From electro to minimal, Chicago Jack to Detroit soul, the deepest to the hardest techno, her attention deficit disorder requires variety in both music and technique.

With her foray into the realm of dubstep and bass music, the same rules (or lack of them) apply. From straight up chest rattling bangers to skeletonized exercises in minimal dub to bits and pieces of electro and techno, it’s all in the mix. Utilizing over a decade of experience on the ones and twos, combined with the flexibility and creative possiblities of Ableton Live to re-edit, loop on the fly and add effects and beats, Shiva brings a fresh approach to the dubstep palette.

With several techno releases on wax (including a remix of techno legend Woody McBride) and her recent vinyl release on Dubkraft (w/ Alien Pimp), as well as her radio show on Dubstep.fm, and a new label in the works, Shiva is determined not only to spread the eclectic sounds of dubstep and techno to new audiences, but to quite possibly live in a subwoofer someday.

I’ve been very lucky throughout the years to be able to push the music I believe in, in all manner of ways. After fourteen years working in the music industry, you might be familiar with my work with internationally recognized booking agency, the Konspiracy Group. You may have also bought my Dawn Stepped Outside 12” on Immerse; it’s a personal favorite. I may have even played some records for you or turned you onto something new via the show I used to host for Canada’s version of the BBC. Lord knows; you might have heard my dulcet tones on the first Dubstep Wars show back in 2006.

I like the recorded output of Steve Albini, cold Red Stripe and subways. I also believe that Spaceape was dead on when he asked the question: How did we get here and where do we go now?

I like lots of different styles of electronic music, normally the more melodic individual quirky leftfield stuff with a good dose of funk and soul thrown in.

When out clubbing or DJing I like to hear a mix of vibes and genre’s so this 20 min mix is therefore a short taster of my DJ style . . mix was recorded with vinyl, sampling loops with a redsound cycloops sampler and Fx unit.

I dabble in promotion . . . I’ve run at an outdoor eclectronic event Blooptfunk last few years in sleepy Newbury in Berkshire, which has been incredibly lucky enough to have Pinch, N type, Walsh, Cyrus, Warlock playing alongside live act’s such Point B and Derailleur.

DJ wise I’ve played alongside James Lavelle, Mr C and Craig Richards in the past and span a few short sets at this years Glade Festival on the Glade Stage.

I record as Bleepfunk, again many different styles and flavours (3 more tracks on myspace - 2 currently getting DJ play from Radioactive Man) . . . erm, enough of that anyways . .

My enjoyment of dubstep, listening to and collecting vinyl is fairly recent, so I’ve put together something a bit different.

It’s mix of underground dance music that caught my attention when i moved down to London a few years ago and dates back to the early 80’s; growing from the traditional disco scene and innovated by artists, initially in italy, through the use of drum machines, synthesizers and vocoders.

“Italo Disco”, is mainly distinguished by it’s spacey and futuristic qualities, but it’s the uplifting aspect of this music I enjoy the most; with a regular crowd at the nights, enjoying the music, very much a community in the same way the dubstep scene is in London.

The tracks can range from being full of energy and fun, with driving basslines drawing to mind pictures of a packed and strobing basement in New York circa 1984(such is the case with “Problemes D’Amour”, “Do You Wanna Funk” and “Dragon’s Legend”). To darkly sinister and hypnotic.

Eerie synths and robotic voices foretelling of creatures in the night, come to take you away in the imminent space invasion, as you’ll hear from “Exalt Exalt”, “Ultimate Warlord” and “Spies”.

The mix is made up of tracks all released in the 80’s except the last one, Alden Tyrell’s “Rendez Vous at Rimini” which was released in 2005.

I just squeezed that in at the end to give you an idea of the influence early pioneers can have on an artist making music today.

Hope you enjoy it and hear some stuff you dont normaly listen to.

Also, out to everyone on the dubstepforum making it what it is; a friendly community, with a wealth of mixes and information that iv used to fuel my enjoyment for the past year. out to all of ya! Cheers!
