Lifestyle Recordings kick off 2014 with their best release to date, calling upon Conduct to lead you through the Shadows, the label’s first EP of the new year. And what an EP it is, a musical journey over five tracks which take you through dark, light, shade and gloom, encompassing an entire range of emotions, feelings and musical styles. The production duo are fast rising to the top of the d&b game, and the Shadows EP will further cement their reputation for flowing, involving music.

The title track plays leadoff on the EP, ticking into life before grinding out its gritty existence. Go straight into the heart of the machine, be lead straight into the Shadows. The quality and hard work which Conduct have put into this release is obvious from the get-go, with every sound obviously agonised over for months, but directed straight at your heart and your head. Eternally brings in strings, an effecting piano lead and some more contemplative vibe to create another world. Beauty and emotion in sound for the new year.
Overstand takes things in a more minimal direction, building gradually into what becomes an all-out, postmodern club banger, with engineering strongly to the fore. This is swiftly followed by Start It, which has a more mysterious air to it, blending some MC rhymes with a stinging, heart-attack kick drum, eerie samples, and slinking, in and out bass pressure. The various tracks on the EP show off Conduct’s ability to mix and blend up the styles, but still keeping a very consistent feel to the release. It fits perfectly with Lifestyle’s vibe of the different and the unusual.
Closer Anything sums up the EP perfectly, showcasing Conduct’s musicality, attention to detail and ability to control anything they lay their hands on. Low-slung, mean and moody, this is the sound which is taking the music forward. Keep an eye out for LFS037, and take a trip into the Shadows.
