Compression For Dummies .... ?

Right I understand compression is a big thing nowadays But all i seem to do is twiddle the Nobs ( no pun intended ) and dont actually know what im doing ...

So can one of you pro's or anyone realy explain to me what to do or in complete beginner terms for drums ...
