I always work the drums. .. il copy the 16 bar and most times go from a tense beat and strip down to a step marching type rhythm hat in a few off beats or take away try keep the listener guess (but not too much as the repetitiveness is the reason of drum and bass haha) then switch up the bass again try keep the listener guessing with some end phase beeps and basses crashes and rides etc
