Why the hate?

Let's clear one thing up first; i'm not that into the 'scene' and i don't dj.

Now my question is, why is there so much hate for anything remotely "mainstream". just because something is no longer 'underground' it has to be bad? i've noticed this a lot from reading both here and on DOA. anything that enters the charts or gets played more than a few times seems to be instantly hated and people go on about "rinsing it out" or whatever. i notice this with people who like dance etc too. when twist em out came out i seem to remember a lot of people saying how new and different it was, and there was loads of love for it. then the whole "clownstep" thing seemed to take off and everyone hated twist em out, bodyrock and the rest because they fitted into that stupid subgenre and were quite sucessful out of the 'underground'. funny how everyone's tastes changed overnight.

what happened to music being music? nothing (aside from pop music or whatever) is bad - people's tastes differ. it seems the dnb scene can't understand this. maybe it's just my view as more of an outsider but there seems to be too much negativity.

maybe i'm talking shit, i dunno. some clever fucker will probably rip my post to shreds..

yo son i feel you .......speak your mind at all time's...
i under stand what you are saying but not all of us
do shit like that it must be the older dj's there full of drama man... or it's just that some people just follow the crowd and can't think on there own....but the real will
stay real and the fake will alway's try to fit in :gpeace:

I HATE THE MAINSTREAM, I HATE IT IN THE FACE

lol only joking, y got a very good point there, and yeah its wrong in ways, but I think it people wanting to keep dnb Underground.

if you look at it from a wider veiw, its the same in all styles of music, take Eminem for example, he has no credibility in the underground hiphop world because he's mainstream, same with rock bands such as ........... (I dont know much about rock to be honest but....) limp bizkit or what ever, soon as they went mainstream everone hated them.

so it aint just a DnB ting, people just like being part of an underground scene

Underground is cool because mainstream is accesible by millions of 'regular' folks and they can't feel part of an elite with it, I think. Bullshit I know. When a genre of music starts segregating into many sub genres, that's when you get hating, because groups reckon their style dope and everyone elses is shabba, when at the end of the day its all the same music. The more the music gets divided, the more hating happens. I mean, just look at Emo.

totally agreed man, big up yourself. first time bodyrock was played roni size ran up to andy c's decks (think it was roni) and rewound the tune, which meant most of us probably loved it at the time. Popular tunes always become slightly main steam coz that why its called POP. "POPular" music. Its a good point man (y)

couldnt give a fuck!

why do people always have to make issues out of stuff? Its all just music, its all just sound! forget the image, forget the bullshit!

its crap!

"oh i like drum n bass, oh shit i just heard a cool garage tune...arrrrgh. what am i im sooo confused!"

just forget the bullshit!

As far as commercial vs. underground, I think they do need each other, like symbiosis. You can't have an underground if there isn't a rather large overground, its an alternative or counter-culture, and as such needs something to 'counter' against. The commercial arena will always be looking for the next big thing, and the underground is usually most likely to produce that; how long it takes for them to figure it out is another matter.
People into underground styles tend to be quite passionate about music, and quite specialist too. Its human nature to want to protect that from any perceived watering down caused by exposure to the lowest common denominator. Witness 'Addicted To Bass'.
I think its quite different when the commercial moves to meet the underground, as happened with Bodyrock or Timeless. [On a non-dance note I recall Robert Smith from The Cure saying this about their '92 album 'Wish' when it came out]
So there's a continual readjustment of the borders between the two, with popsters trying to stay cool, and heads trying to stay, erm, ahead. As much as I would like to agree with Lokki, there are too many forces at work for it to all be 'just music', and I agree that people should try to forget the image though.
eg.I have loved listening to Haste's 80s mixes cause they are POP POP POP wicked, but I think he was surprised so many 'underground' types reacted so well to them.
I also agree 'the whole clownstep thing' (a beast of the internet if ever there was) has caused whole swathes of dNb to be unfairly classed as brainless and non-progressive. I love my technical shit, liquid, and whatnot, but that doesn't mean tunes that are made for a dancefloor reaction are worth less somehow, or that people who like them are shallow and not discerning enough. Its about a good mix of styles.
I think you make a good point

You're missing the point, tunes get hated coz they're unoriginal, monotonous, repetitive wank.

People have a right to their opinions, its called freedom of speech, if you want to take that away then you are removing a large part of the mentality of what dnb was built on. If people werent sick of mainstream music they wouldnt go looking to the undeground for something different.

you're missing the point, we're talking about tunes getting hated once they become commercially successful, and why.

yes people have freedom of speech, whose talking about taking it away? by suggesting we shouldn't have this discussion what are you doing>?

I didnt really read the thread, I'm just so used to the same tired arguments with regard to hating of "mainstream" tunes.

Do you not get bored of hearing the same repetitve/simplistic crap endlessly? Every tune that I like thats on the radio is killed for me within a matter of weeks from overexposure, especially in dnb when the tunes that get onto the radio are very simple and unvaried anyway.

If you search a bit harder you find stuff a hell of a lot better.

oh yeah I get bored of that so easily its not funny man, of course. But its not going to stop happening, so I don't invest a lot of energy in it. It is a shame simplistic tunes making radio might also turn off potential dNb heads ...
My solution is I really don't listen to the radio at all, dNb doesn't make it to any commercial radio much in Australia anyway, the number of dNb tunes that have made radio playlists in recent years can be counted on one hand. I have different reasons to be pissed at radio ...

Clownstep always sucked. However if someone made a mix of genuine clownstep labeled tracks, I'd download it just for a laugh.

don't worry for speaking your mind man. everyone is entitled to their own opinions mate. it is true some people are like sheep with their opinions.
fair play to the stuff that gets bought out on mainstream, but the majority of stuff that is taken to mainstream level is usually sh!t (shake ur body???). If it is taken to the mainstream then the tune has to be mellow and with vocals with the exception of twist 'em out. The big guys have to appeal to people who do not listen to dnb.

I don't know about that. Any music that's taking the piss has a value even if only it reminds you have formulaic the music has become OR reminds you just how great the music you like is.

Back to the subject:

I understand the underground/white label/promo (they're all similar) mentality but I don't share it. Just because a tune isn't widely played doesn't mean its good (perhaps the oppositve). Same applies for genres of music. On the other hand, popular tunes and music might be shite.

People need to hate & need to feel elite and always will.

Oh yeah, and the moment I start feeling better than people because I've got a track that they haven't heard or can't get - that's the moment I become a complete jerk (if not one yet).
