Safe, Ive been producing for about a year now on a dell inspiron laptop with an AMD x2 processor. Ive had the laptop a fair while and it is now cluttered up with VST Plug-ins and tonnes of sample files etc. The laptop basically is on its last legs in terms of coping with my production requirments and I am definately going to update my set up by latest xmas.

The thing is i REALLY dont no wot to get. I run Cubase and sometimes Reason with various plug ins like Massive, and other NI shiz. My budget is around the 400-500 mark.

Im considering getting a Mac due to soooo many people telling me theyre amazing, yet i've heard they also fuck up alot. My uni where I will be studying Music Production next year use Macs running ProTools and this will probly be the dicidng factor on what to get. Both Cubase and Protools are PC/Mac so it doesn't reli matter either way i spose its just ease of use. BUT! Macs are fucking expensive and in the current financial climate I am wondeirng if it will be more worth me spending my money on a higher spec PC system with higher spec processor speed RAM etc... whcih are in abundance all over the internet.

In terms of new machines Mac Mini's seem to be the only systems I can afford. But I can obviously go through the eBay route for a second hand iMac or earlier Mac Pro. But is second hand Mac's worth getting over a new PC????

I want a machine that will last me a while and if need be update as i go. I am very comfortable producing on a PC Cubase set up, but I want a system that i could use with my uni work (Pro Tools) aswell as my personal productions on Cubase.

PLEASE HELP ME IVE BEEN DEBATING THIS TO MYSELF FOR AGES NOW AND CANT DECIDE. I HOPE THIS DOESNT START A MAC VS PC WAR ON HERE BUT I HONESTLY NEED HELP DECIDING!

Ez..

I recommend building yourself a PC mate.. If your are going to buy a PC over a mac then its the way to do it, and if you don't know what to get just consult the forum or a mate :D.. I'm bored right now in my ict lesson so i guess i can try design you a pc lol!?

I'm really biased against macs as i really dont like them lol..

Just going for a ciggie then will get on it :D

Safe..

I rekon i will defo go the custom build way. I just had a quik look down tottenham court rd on my lunch break and theres quite a few places there that do custom. U cant reli buy ready made desktops anywhere. Most of the shops i went in in fact only sold laptops and macs lol
This one shop in fact went thru a custom build including a quad core processor, 500 gb, hard drive, and high spec m,otherboard... etc.... for under 500.
i will take my time i rekon and get the right combo i want before buying.

cheers for the help

Your lucky then i just looked on their site and the cheapest refurbished ones they have there are like £899

I am also looking for something more powerful than a laptop.

PC is probly the best way forward but i will still give it some thought.

hmmmmmmm
getting both... i realli cant afford tht hahaha i just want one system that i can run cubase and pro tools on efficiently and quikly with a large amount of ease.

u get fuck loads more for ur money with PC's (pound for pound speaking). It's just i no that im gonna be using Macs alot wen i get to uni, so maybe its an idea to start getting used to them, but it wud be really god for my home producing to have a high spec pc.

maybe getting both isnt such a bad idea after all hahaha.

FUCK IT ILL GET A PC and if i feel i need a mac after a few months of uni then so be it!

hmmmm.... not really a production pc.... and that soundcard is a gaming card.... you should get a pro-audio card

heres what im gonna be building v soon......

Intel Q6600 quad core processor

MSI Neo2-FR P35 mobo

2 x 1gb OCZ ram (for now...)

500gb Seagate Barracuda HD

Antec Sonata III + 500w earthwatts PSU

basic MSI dual output video card

all in all, comes to under £400 without the soundcard...... which i havent included as i dont see it as a computer part (even if it is a pci card)...... its an individual piece of studio equipment that needs to be looked at separately
