avi is just a container format
the actual encoding... x264 or divx are the two
x264 does really compression but eats yr CPU and takes time
divx is alot faster to encode but doesn't look as nice

as to progs: I use mplayer but I is a linux user, I hear good things w.r.t. "handbrake"

Can you not rip to mpeg2?

Pretty much the industry standard and the file size will be way, way lower than avi...

We really only capture thing in avi then encode to Mpeg 2, mp4 or flash, depending on the destination...

If you're putting something on youtube mp4 workd great...

xilisoft dvd to wmv converter (cracked copies are easy to to find), takes a long time, but you can rip some very high quality video, with brilliant sound.
