When should you start getting paid to DJ?

Simple question really, do we play for free until we start releasing tunes or is it ok to ask for petrol money and beers?

when nights other than ones you or your friends run start booking you i would imagine

depends on the circumstance, in our dj society whoever plays at the local student club gets a wedge for doing 2 hours. but thats run by a big company (the union) who pay the society to do the music..

if its just a normal night i think transport costs should be considered, unless its like a 2 quid bus ticket..
