When quieting down a distorted sound it loses it distorted effect.

Well i've been messing around with a synth and i have something really fat but it's to loud.
I use ohmicide Distortion and it's all overpowered now. but if i make it quieter it loses it's effect.
I've tried to compress it after the distortion, before the distortion.
and i need the equalizer too because it adds to the effect. If i put that EQ quieter it loses it's effect too.

Any help would be appreciated.
 
Yes, that's the nature of the distortion plugin, it boosts the gain and saturates it. If you put something in quieter, it gets driven much less. You seem to be trying to change the gain before the signal goes into the distortion (like turning down the volume from the synth itself). You have a few choices. Either you lessen the gain AFTER it comes out of the distortion plug in (simply use the channel fader), or export (bounce) the sound to a wav and use that instead.
 
turn the mids a tad low or now, at the desired level, get the high freqs (between 2khz 15khz depending on the bass) a tad up in the mix.
