Just wondering if any of you lot have any musical tastes picked up off parents or relatives from what they were playing when you were a kid.

Dad: Early reggae / Ska, Punk and Mod Revival bands like The Jam and all that.

    Uncles: Northern Soul.

They're playing near me next week I think, at the same place I went to see Dizzee Rascal at last week.

absolutly none. my rents never used to listen to music when i was growing up, never once remember it playing on any occasion other than at parties.

it's actually a wonder i'm remotly musical at all. it's pretty much all i've been interested in all my life.

same here man, my parents are completely clueless when it comes to music.
after telling my old man that im joining a music production course, it took me exactly 3 years of explaining to give him a vague idea of what a producer actually does, and to convince him that no, the pop stars that you see on telly couldnt record to save their lives.
fer real man, my pops was like "you just press a button and sing into the microphone, then you burn a CD. what more is there to know about recording and making music? why cant you learn the guitar or something useful like that ?"

my mum and dad listened to a lot of the same stuff... what i remember most from growing up is Motown and a little Reggae, lots of 80s pop rock like Fine Young Cannibals, INXS... My dad always had a thing for Mott The Hoople, Ian Drury, Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel.

Always have a good rummage in the record boxes when I go home, brings back good memories :)

Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Zep, Pink Floyd etc etc off my dad, then stuff like Queen and Bon Jovi off my mum.

Which led me into Guns 'n Roses, then into heavier stuff like Metallica, Megadeth, which led into Nu Metal like Korn, wich led into Rage Against The Machine which led to Hip-Hop, which led me to Drum and Bass which led me to Dubstep.

I owe all my musical taste to my parents. I'd probably be listening to RnB.
