My lappy is messed up. I was updating VLC, something went to shit somewhere along the way and now I can't open VLC and the updater file thingy that was being downloaded is resting undeletably on my desktop, supposedly being "used by a program some-fucking-where".

I've tried rebooting and I've tried closing random shit in the task manager. What should my next step of spastic technophobia be?

try Uninstalling VLC via Control Panel

download the full official install VLC, and install from that

are you logged in as Admin?

try booting into Safe Mode (Hold F8 on the first POST screen after you switch your laptop on) then delete the file, and uninstall VLC

if it still doesnt work, try WinAmp until you can find a better solution

Redownloading VLC now, safe mode and all that didn't work at all.

It allowed me to overwrite the old buggy file so I guess we're making progress, lads!!
