What are your current feelings on the Drum & Bass scene?

Loving the scene at the moment - Lots of Lesser-know producers kickin the asses of the big-wigs in terms of originality.

So many off-shoot labels are popping up - an producers arent exclusively sticking to labels like they were before.

The evil tunes have stepped up a notch in terms of dancefloor pressence imo too (gotta give it up to the Resident Evil boys an all who sail in the collective ship :D )

The Jumpier dnb is getting alot of attention in my collection at the moment -
But, that said - there are too many 'clone-tunes' on the bouncey side around, so-an-so's new one (dont wanna name anyone!) sounds like the last one he put out, or so-an-so used the same sound bank as who-ever! With all the facilities these guys have, you wouldnt expect it!

With the onslaught of tunes B.A.I. is knockin out at the moment with 8 - 10 new pieces this year so far (that ive heard!) I see things shaping up nicely. ;)

Wow, big topic.
I think the music is getting broader to keep track of now there is a global scene, it seems the high energy, jump-up sound has been fairly big in UK this year, but a lot of people here slag it off which gives me the shits.
also, there is not enough dedication to the more soulful melodic styles here, the one night that specialised (called Soulaar funnily enuff) closed over a year ago.
I am stoked people like Pendulum, Concord Dawn, Greg Packer, Mathematics etc have broken thru to the international stage.
However dNb still desperately wants to stay underground in Oz, and that makes people more insular and wanky. "keep it real", yo shut up. I know there are disadvantages to commercial aspects, we all do, but some people wear it as a badge and that annoys me.

Overall I think 2003 was a great year, there was sooo much good stuff on a variety of styles. So ... I am optimistic about the music, and ambivalent about the 'scene'.

I'm feeling the global takeover d&b is making at the moment. I think it has opened up so many doors. First of all you've got some of the best producers been discovered in places like Australia, New Zealand, America, & even as far as Estonia!! Labels don't seem to be so as scared to take a risk on new artist's & tracks, I mean look at Renegade Hardware they've setup Barcode especially for that type of material. As Jay Walker put it artist's are now moving around labels & seem to be partnering with other people to help create new & exciting sounds e.g. Fresh & Adam F, DJ Craze & JuJu, Mampi Swift & Friction etc.
I also seem to be seeing more producers trying out a different style of d&b or even branching off into Techno, Breaks, Down-tempo, & live performances.
A new wave of Jump-Up sound has occured in the form of the big knees up basslines, but it's become that controvesial within the scence it's exciting to see what happens next.
D&B is prospering sweetly & I don't think it has reached it's full maturity just yet, but when you see dance events holding 50,000 people from all over the world in a different country each year thats when you know it's global domination is complete.

In all seriousness though what other UK born music has cracked the US market? d&b is getting pretty big out there now, didn't Fresh move out there to setup a studio?

(how nice) The line ups for partys have been a lot more firce than usual witch is good ..bring it on ... :antitank: :antitank: :dual:

theres a lot more raves failing though, dance music in general's in a bit of a slump. our scenes stronger than most theres just fewer people going to raves than there once was.

i agree ..but drum and bass from a ravers point of view is satisfiing at most venues i cant stand it wen you cant move in the small raves ..but the big raves are heavy wen its ram .. personally i prefere free partys in old shaked out buildins ... peace... big up breakneck .... :jackson:

I believe they have their own setup.

Those are too long.. I havn't read any.. I'm sorry.

in a short sentence:

The best kick everyone's ass musically, the rest are making the name look bad.

There's a lot less new tunes that I like now, even getting to the stage where I won't buy any new stuff some weeks, whereas in early 2003 I spent shitloads and still missed a lot of tunes I wanted (gives me a chance to beef up my oldskool collection tho)
I've had a chance to decide what's missing from the scene and got cracking on making the style of tunes I'd rather be hearing, giving me a nice gap in the market. It looks like plenty of people are feeling the same way as I am about it so hopefully I'm heading in the right direction.

I think all styles of music have taken a battering lately, and many styles of music have gone downhill in a bigger way than dnb so I reckon we'll pull through nicely

I'm loving it. There's so much variety kicking around it's skinting me out every week. Just a bit of a shame that a lot of the name DJ's aren't picking up on it.

big up' to the drum and bass scene as it's growing and the music is getting more diverse (except a few who make very same sounding tunes) But I don't have anything bad to say cause, I'm not pissed off it ain't 1999 and shit.

hey dnb is pumping out good tunes as where most of the other generes of music, are making shit, just look at hip-hop 5 years there was a lot of classics being made, and then all of a sudden everything became bling-bling, and got old really fast.

I'm lovin it!!! Went through a rough patch last year for a while with a lot of very samey tunes........got pretty bored. However, I'm lovin all the new stuff. Especially Another Planet by Pendulum, I know it's getting on a bit now, but I can listen to it over and over again :slayer: . Out with Twisted in with the new......

Big up the Dnb scene and all involoved. Worldwide bizniz!!! BBBBRRROOOKKKK OUT!

Personally I could do with a bit more envelope pushing and more musical pieces.

re:envelope pushing, do you mean experimenting with different timing/structure or just different noises?
