In a foretaste of the full length album set for release early this summer, the quartet of Hive, Keaton, Echo & Gridlok soften up the ground with the explosive “Violent Sound.” Encapsulating everything you’ve come to expect from Violence, “Violent Sound” is a coruscating plunge into the swirling energy and industrial funk that has marked the label from the start. A seething, intensely concentrated trip, it rolls out of the gate hard, covering itself in synthetic chatter and a swaying humanoid voice. Winding up into a towering mass of martial horns and granite hard bass, the drop and journey afterwards is monstrous, as much hypnotizing as brutalizing.
In a match-up long in coming, Dom & Roland delivers a tremendous reworking of Hive’s classic “Neo.” Introducing a raft of dense instrumentation that thickens the space of the original, Dom revels in ominous textures, delivering an orchestral confidence seldom heard in drum and bass. Staccato piano chords and distressed chorales, limned by strained pads and breathing strings work in counterpoint to the brooding synths, rolling drums and caustic bass of the original. Every bit as heavy as its predecessor, yet a marked departure from it, Dom’s remix plays as an impressionistic vision of an imagined dystopia on the edge of collapse. As much a formidable work of imagination as a tremendous dance floor mover.
