This is my DJ setup at the moment as I can't afford CDJs etc at the moment. Just a quick question though - why do you never see professional DJs using just a MIDI controller and laptop? Okay, maybe it gives you shortcuts on certain aspects of mixing, but it does the job all the same IMO. Just curious. Cheers!

Fair point mate, but a MIDI controller is basically a replication of two turntables and a mixer albeit scaled down. Might become more and more popular in the future anyway.

Nothing worse than a DJ with a mouse in my opinion!.. I've used a midi controller before and really did not get the feel for it!. I've been using turntables for about 3 years so of course it really wasent going to click first time. On the other hand i have a copy of ableton live, Which i love, and could easily bang out a set on it if needed (prefer not too) .

personally i hate paying to see a "dj" using laptops etc. for all we know they could be using software that can auto beat match and any chump can do that!

i saw deadmau5 on the 30th with some mates. He quite evidently doesn't do live mixing (you try putting headphones over that hat thing) but his set still delivers, i just choose to ignore his gesticulating and prancing and just listened to the music with the crowd. and it was good.

depends though if i wasnt completely battered i might have been pissed off

Minimal house is the biggest failure since pedophilia was invented!
sorry i rephrase, i meant minimal tech (stuff like alex smoke) but the rest of his set is entirely minimal house - which is no where near as good. like i said, i was hammered, therefore everything appeared better :)

I saw him at HTFR last year, looked like he was mixing to me, he didnt have his hat thing on for a while and no-one seemed to really know who it was until he did.

deadmau5 isnt a dj

hes a live act! he got a bunch a expensive gear, a few months ago he posted this pic on facebook. it shows the current gear hes touring with

but he also plays with ableton, that touchscreen midicontroller you see on the right,efx1000 and a normal 4channel mixer.

in my mind this isnt playing with a midi controller. its performing.

back to topic:

i started with a midicontroller (hercules dj console rmx) but after touching some vinyl decks for the first time i knew that this was real, not such noobish toy. try some real decks and make your own experience
