USB input, or audio interface?

can I run my audio into a usb type device straight from my mixer or do I need an audio interface. I'm trying to record audio in that program "audacity" and then export it as an MP3. Can someone give me some tips here. thnx Right now I'm trying to record from mixer to a 1/8th jack into the mic input. I don't have a special sound card either. Just the one that came with the computer. I can record but it sounds like rubbish.
 
Stick your jack into line in and make the levels are not too low or too high.

If you don't have line in or the sound is still crap, then you have a very crap sound card, buy a new or used one for more than 10 quid - with a line in input.
 
yup what dustek said.... make sure you use the LINE input

even rubbish soundcards should record at acceptable quality... not great but acceptable
