On my DJM-600 mixer I have an effect called "trans"

If anyone is familiar it kind of introduces a sort of choppy, on/off type of effect...

Does anyone know what this effect would be on ableton or other DAW? I've been trying to figure out how to mimic that sort of thing and can't seem to. I suppose I could just automate the volume to go on/off like that really quickly but it wouldn't be structured to a beat sequence very easily

maybe sidechain the volume to a hat or any other signal and turn that off. now you just have to put the signal where you want it to duck.

i would imagine it stands for transience or transient.
it takes away/adds either attack sustain or decay of said sample. best used with old breaks.
it can give them more punch resulting in less need to have the vengeance synth for meaty drums.

it might not but it probably does by the way you describe it ;)

If you can use cubase, there is an effect that does exactly this, there is a standard vst plugin called chopper which will do exactly what you want. It is essentially a tremello effect and i believe on the 600 it stands for transform.
