OFFBEAT: Drum n bass pressure @ Colour
22 Inverness St, Camden, London NW1 7HJ

A very special Offbeat comes along on Wednesday 25th of January...
the Bristol 'Ting ...will showcase exclusive dj sets by some of Bristol's finest dnb producers/djs:

KUBIKS

Making a name for himself since 1997, Kubiks has continued to make his mark on the scene with his worldwide DJ sets, releases on BS1, Renegade, Defunked, Industry, Tangent and his own label 'Rubik Records'. In addition to his manic schedule Kubiks has managed to run one of Bristol most enduring nights, The Rubiks Cube. Now also established in Swansea, Ibiza & Birmingham

Influenced by the seminal movement that was 70's soul, jazz and funk, his productions have exuded the musical feel of the genre he was inspired by. Silky rhodes keys, lush pads and dreamy soundscapes define his style. Recently his pairing with Davide Carbone & Lomax has attracted the attention of the biggest names in the scene and received big play from the likes of Fabio, Bailey, EZ Rollers and LTJBukem.

With forthcoming releases on several established labels including Defunked, Intrinsic and Rubik Records, alongside his busy DJ schedule, record label and club night duties, Kubiks is set to establish himself as a major player of 2005 and beyond.

LOMAX

Hailing from Amersham in Bucks, Nick Hill aka Lomax has always had a very musical background. A piano player from a young age, and with a degree in music behind him, he was first introduced to drum & bass by the sounds of LTJ Bukem and John B back in 1997, and from then on he began producing in his bedroom in 2000.

As the original member of Hold Tight, with several releases on such labels as Industry, Renegade, Rubiks and Advanced to name a few, Nick has been extremely busy on the production front since 2003, when Hold Tight's first two tunes, "Dirty Habits" and "9 2 5" were championed by Andy C and licensed for the nightlife compilation. A few years and many tunes down the line, he is now based in Bristol and is very much a part of a lively drum & bass community. He is now involved in various projects and collaborations with artists such as Kubiks & BCee.

THE INSIDERS

Ben Payne and Joe Wills have been making beats for about six years, concentrating on music professionally for the last three. They've put out some top releases on some of the best labels around like Creative Source, 31 Records, Defunked & Renegade – not bad for a couple of guys who are both just 22.

Insiders tracks have found their way into the boxes of LTJ Bukem, Makoto, Nookie, Fabio, Goldie, Teebee, Bryan Gee, DJ Marky, Hype, Patife and High Contrast amongst other key players in the drum n bass scene.

Their tight mixing style and dubplate heavy tune selection has lead to many worldwide gig dates. They have so far toured in Japan, Norway, Poland, Italy, Holland, Switzerland, Germany, France and Austria. Several of these gigs have been with Good Looking as part of the legendary Progression Sessions tours.

In Bristol they continue to push the deeper drum n bass sound with their own night, Intrigue, regularly showcasing names like Fabio, D-Bridge, Storm & Artificial Intelligence.

They are also known as Catch 22, with 3 of their productions featured on Progression Sessions Vol. 10 mixed by LTJ Bukem

Recent releases include Enigma (Creative Source), Deep Down / Back & Forth 12" (31 Records), Grace (Rubik Records) and Do Your Thing (Nu Directions). Caned by the likes of Fabio, LTJ Bukem, Storm and Bryan G to name a few.

XAMPLE

Xample, who originally hails from Bristol, found it hard when growing up to ignore jungle music due to its presence within the city, as a result of influential artists such as Roni Size, Die, Krust and the rest of the full cycle camp causing damage throughout the scene. After spending much of his youth going out to jungle/drum and bass nights around the city Xample soon saved up enough money to buy his first set of decks.

After a year or so he got his first break with a residency at a small drum and bass night at Bristol's Thekla. Unfortunately this was only short lived as he soon moved out of the city to go to university in Liverpool. Once in Liverpool xample soon established a residency at Future bound's 'X' night which helped consolidate his DJ skills with opportunity to play alongside some of the countries leading DJ's such as Hype, Zinc, Pascal, Jumping Jack frost, Bad company and Peshey. At this time Xample was also trying to put his own mark on the city alongside another Liverpool DJ, Bane. This lead to them establishing their Contrast night which aimed at offering a mid week drum and bass night for Liverpool.

Around this time, due to regularly attending drum and bass nights around the city, it wasn't to long before a mix up lead to Xample meeting Stev the promoter of Sophonic, which resulted in him being introduced to Sol. Due to them both sharing similar interests with regards to music they soon decided to try and write a track together, after receiving some positive feedback the pair have carried on producing and also DJing together. Xample now has a 12" signied to Frequency and a track on the new Dimensions EP on RAM Recordings.
