I don't think this is 100% true, I'm assuming you can use them if you get them cleared by the owner/label. I might be wrong tho.

You're right. You can use them if you get them cleared with the owner/label. Thing is: it's difficult (for what I've read, not that I needed to) to actually get some bigger companies to even answer your contact. You may want to use someone's services to do that for you, but let's face it: if you're a bedroom producer (like some of us) would it be worth the hassle?

Oh, just reminded: when I first started making music, I did a horrendous remix for a song from the game Silent Hill 4. Sent the composer (Akira Yamaoka) an e-mail through his website and also the company that own the rights to SH series (Konami). Never got a reply.
 
I don't really know much about it as we havent had to do that but i bet it can be missions sometimes. I always think of Artisan by Lomax tho, straight up Family Guy sample; i've wondered if that was cleared, or actually thinking about it if they even needed to. Done a tiny bit of reading and it seems like a murky area.
