    Someone help me please!

I bought an External Hard Drive yesterday, to help share files between my Mac (os9) and my PC ...

When I 1st plugged it into the PC, it appeared and seemed to work fine.

But the Mac wouldn't recognise and asked me to format it. So I did as DOS and then it popped up fine on both, except for being 42gb instead of 320gb.

So I reformatted as Mac 0S9, and it works perfectly on the Mac as 298gb.

But now I can't get it to appear on the PC!

It appears (on the PC) in the device list as USB Mass Storage, including on the desktop toolbar to disconnect, but I can't work out how access it, or get to it to try and reformat!

It was specified as PC only, but the shop said it should work on both fine, (and I checked I could take it back and change it for a Mac & PC one). I'm wondering if it, or any other I might change it for can't work with both os9 and XP?

    Any suggestions or help...

    Anyone?

I don't know for sure, but I'd imagine when you formatted it first time, the file system was FAT, which only goes to a certain size (can't remember what size), hence the smaller 42Gb size.

When you formatted it using the Mac file system it works fine on the Mac and is the correct size, however Windows will only read it's own file system, which is FAT, FAT32, or the now widely used NTFS.

Without seeing the problem, and not having much experience with external discs between different operating and file systems, that sounds like the problem. Of course, I could be completely wrong :teeth:

See if the manufacturer has a forum, the chances are you won't be the first person to attempt this, I'd imagine the answer is already waiting there for you.

    Thanks Stu!

I checked their online forum, and then spoke to tech support who said it can't be set to operate on both MAC & PC.

So, it's back to the shop for an exchange...:|

Which is alright...Just a pain having to stand there and explain to the shop tech geeks...:moe:

    This seems to be working!

Disk is now on the desktop & is formatting.

    Cheers CK!

Saved me a trip into towm, and looking a div in the shop...

This hard drive is essential to my sorting out my pics & life, and trying to sorta nicer myspace!

    (yn)

ps. It's a Toshiba 320gb drive...£59.99 + Vat from Morgan Computers...Can't say fairer than that...If I can make it work!

    Shite!

It formatted and works perfectly on the PC, but not the MAC. Unreadable...

The PC partition wizard won't let me choose the FATS, only NFTS (and won't let me do a manual partitioning).

I'm assuming this means it is PC or MAC only. Not both...(@ least cos I've got XP on my PC which don't let the man choose)...

Unless there's a way to force it to let me manually choose FATS?

Still. @ Least I can talk about partitions and FATS & NFTS incompatibilities when i take it back, instead of saying 'I plugged the shiny thing into my computer, and it didn't work, but I don't know why' etc...

    :monkey:

Cheers anyway. & I have learned a bit about 'computer management' and file structures....

best bet....back all the stuff you want on the external...and pic between the pc or the Mac for primary use....
worst case: switching back and forth could cause a complete whipe out...as Im asuming yur just trying to free up space on yur machines?!?

    Kinda but not really...

My Mac's good for email's and basic webstuff, and I've got 5 yrs of emails & work & pics on it, but my PCs faster for everything else, but it's getting full with games & music etc.

I need to be able to share everthing, cos all the burnt data cds are only properly readable on the Mac, obviously freeing up space will help, but it's not the priority.

I think it's back to shop tomorrow for a different hard drive...

But that's cool. It's the struggling with configurations and compatibility that I don't like.

Fes . That Lacie Porsche was the next model up, and it was guaranteed to work on Mac & PC! Not that pricey either @ morgancomputers.com (or co.uk), and man! Is they sleek & gorgeous!

    Good with sushi as well.

Try some with tuna or salmon or yellowtail or whatever...

    Some people also like avocado.
