I've just come back from seeing my mate who's an audiologist and he's told me I have a perforated eardrum.

Im not deaf in one ear but it's definetly more quiet than the other one, it feels like Ive got water in my ear but just permanently - been like this for a week now and it's really starting to piss me off!!

Got it from diving into a swimming pool, but he reckons the stress to the ear from monitoring (I always use the same ear for monitoring on the decks) is the base of the problem.

Before this, I just thought 'ahh it'll never happen to me' and just lived in ignorance about hearing.

But it's opened my eyes a bit and after I get it fixed I'm definetly investing in a set of moulded acoustic earplugs! Don't care if they look gay, I'd rather be able to mix for many years to come to be honest.

Sorry if that all sounded a bit patronising but I can't stress enough how much it feels like a case of "you dont know what you got till its gone" !!

once i got jumped and smacked round the ear with a shank(dunno what type o' shank) and for a couple of weeks after my ear just leaked liquidy wax all the time..it felt horrible and i had this funny smell which was horrible(no1 else could smell it luckily..i did check)..it must have done something wierd i dunno what though.

also i could stick a cotton bud far into my ear without it hurting it actually felt good when i did it lol....does anyone know what happened to my ear? im just curious..
Its all better and back to normal now though thank god

If you want some acoustic ones then I`ll speak to my mate about it, he's just starting his own audiology business so would defo appreciate the custom.

nah thats just not you - got that now and then too..

@sam - got this once, too... dunno what it is though :/

need to get some earplugs!

mold plugs was the best money ive ever spent.
make sure you get one, around £120.
best place to do it is from the NHS. call your local hospital to find out if they have an audiology department, and they'll measure your ears, and in two weeks you'll have plugs with the filter you chose, 9, 15, 25, or 35 dB.
most "specialised" companies who do this, just order them from the same place as the hospital would do, but they charge up to £100 extra for being the middle man.
dont buy in to it, trust the NHS on this one.

Is it worth getting ones that are cheaper than 120 buck? I had a pair which i brought for around 20 sheets and they were ok. Can't remember what they were though and ive lost them now.

Has anyone got any links to any good ones you can buy off net?

my right ear has lost -10db on the left ear :(

went for test the other week at docs, but both are still above average luckily for me

also done my Uni project on ears and mp3 players. they can seriosly fuck you up and a hell of a lot worse than people realise

How much is your hearing worth to you?

Don't skimp the amount that you'd spend on two weekends out instead of saving your hearing for the rest of your life.

I keep telling people about saving their ears - especially when using mp3 players but I get told by the kids that they want to enjoy frying their ears and that they won't do themselves permanent damage. A couple of pills is better for their brains (not good) than a loud session with an ipod (for their ears).

ipods can go upto 120db now which only 1 minute of listening can damage ur hearing permanently

Shouldnt go above the 5 mark on volumes and shouldnt listen for too long either

If people dont listen, fuck em, let them damage their hearing imo

its the cilia hairs in the inner ear that when damaged never replenish, there are onyl around 1600 of them so we need to take care of them!

Actually, quick question and this may sound a bit retarded but i when DJ's where ear plugs, do they where them in both ears or just have one in on their monitoring ear or headphone ear?

Just wondered what peeps preferences are??

Monitoring mate, why use it on headphones... unless your headphones are up too high. Also - pop them in when back raving, talking, pulling. You can use them on both if have good enough ones.
