Sub Focus - Splash ft. Coco Sumner

Ahhh, so its just their personalities you dislike, or are you not feeling the tunes either? cos thats perfectly understandable...

they are shit hosts, grooverider plays trerrible wobble nonsense, and im not a fan of 'liquid funk' or whatever god awful label fabio gives his taste in music. its not a true representaion of the music whatsoever

Hmmm well I don't really listen to radio one lol

Zane definately draws for tunes that will go beyond a d&b audience, but I just don't feel that what he plays always represents the full extent of the scene

Yes, he is bringing drum and bass to the masses, but it's always a certain type of drum and bass, and I just feel like it's a bit of "lie" sometimes

I'm all for bringing drum and bass to the attention of more people, but if you're always giving them the same kind of thing then it's not really bringing drum and bass

Now if he played a Spectrasoul tune or something like that I'd be impressed, but he never will, because he knows it just won't appeal as much

But what's the point of introducing and pushing something new to the masses that you KNOW is going to appeal? Is that really introducing anything new? Or just playing it safe by giving people what they want?

For me the whole idea of bringing new music to people who wouldn't necessarily listen to it is that you take a risk and challenge them

Surely the whole idea of playing tracks on radio one by people like Pendulum and Sub Focus is to bring the whole drum & bass scene to the masses, but because it's only a certain part of the scene, the masses will never really get into the other sides of the drum and bass scene, because they're always being fed the same sort of thing

It's all a bit hypocritical imo

Fair enough mate, nice to hear your opinion on these things, although what they play is a small portion of what I like, music with Strong emotions and vibes expressed in it, whether thats the summery kind of vibes to the liquid or the powerful feelings expressed in the Jump uppy stuff. Their ducking can be annoying, but I generally enjoy their hosting styles and the vast majority of their music.

Or bring them that and let them discover Spectrasoul by themselves?

People dont need to be babysat through music. The best thing about music is finding out new shit for yourself, not neccesarily to be spoonfed by radio

drum & bass on radio is generally quite shit. Hype's show used to be good until they chopped it down to 15 mins or whatever. Crissy Criss is laughable. Bailey is ok. I think a good radio host would be Friction.....his podcasts are really good

Yeah but lets face it man the people listening to commercial radio are only gonna get into anything if it's pushed in their face

But then I guess there are the very very small minority of people who might explore something for themselves ...

At the end of the day man, if you wanna play some drum and bass on radio one, why does it always have to be Chase & Status or Pendulum or Sub Focus, why not play some Spectrasoul, some Noisia and some Culture Shock?

It's all drum and bass isn't it? Co-incidence? Unfortunately I tink not.

you said it your self. its commercial, and its easy for people (non-dnb heads) to listen to.

I said this once before but if you played Noisia at 11am on a wet Wednesday morning on Radio 1, people would think the world is caving in on them.

If anything, the D&B show should give you everything you need but unfortunately the show is hosted by two of the biggest morons known to man. Terrible selection, awful interview technique. Everything about their show is just wrong.

Besides D&B fans are fickle. You want 'proper' drum & bass played on radio 1 but when drum & bass starts to get a bit of shine, people start complaining

Yeah but people always argue that Zane Lowe is bringing drum and bass to the masses

But he's not

He's just giving them what they wanna hear which is the always latest C&S, Pendulum or Sub Focus track ...

Personally, I feel as a Radio 1 dj he's doing his job by doing this ... but I would never go as far as to say he's doing great things for drum and bass by really bringing it to the attention of people that are unaware

But he's playing it on Radio 1 on a non specialist show. For years you couldnt hear d&b on the radio unless it was the d&b show now you can hear it on drivetime shows. so what if its fucking sub focus or pendulum. people need to stop being so fucking precious about music sometimes. its just music!

This is true ... and silly on their part

Because the scene would be in much better state if the music could be appreciated by more people for the right reasons, for starters less "commercial" producers could actually start making some fucking money out of their hard work without having to sign themselves over to the latest Dizzee Rascal remix

Then more producers could afford to go full time and then that would only mean more good music for everyone!

Okay so he's doing a little bit for the exposure of the scene by playing the odd tune at 174 bpm that he knows everyone is going to like lol

I can appreciate that, but only because drum and bass has such little exposure full stop lol

Man I miss the days when Bodyrock could enter the top 40 just because it was good music

I don't understand why Sub Focus feels the need to put vocals on all his new tracks, I figure it must be to appeal to a more commercial audience- which is a shame, Splash isnt that bad a tune in itself, but with the vocals it just seems to be trying too hard.

Zane lowe is the guy that plays Chase & Status - Hurt You calls it a terrible piece of generic dnb and then a month later he's hailing them as best in the scene. The guy just plays what he's told to.

I like Mary Anne Hobbs, she's probs my favourite "DJ" on Radio 1, although she played out and had to get Pinch to mix for her, she did the EQs tho hahaha.
