how can you get a proper solid sub? so it stands out in the mix, i mean the sort of thing erb n dub uses in my dog vip, where the sub is left on it's own yet it's very prominent.
i have massive, vanguard, sylenth, so leave your tips and stuff down there, cheers

the bit your on about is a lpf over the original bass (im guessing). if not then making a sub stand out is a balance between adding harmonics, with distrotion or whatever, to make it stand out. or keeping it clean to keep the weight.

also keeping space in your mix for the sub will help it stand out.

tommy boosted the sub at 500 hz and really made the charachter come out nicely. it was an 808 kick i seem to recall.
cooledit (or audition as its called these days) has a 'generate tone' function lets you specify what frequency you want the tone on
