Need help on this one please...

I went to a friend's house on sunday, and he's a professional dnb DJ who currently plays on some bars. I've seen him play and he's good, so I went over to his house and he was giving me some tips when all of a sudden he just asked me "why are you not touching the platter"?

This confused me a lot since all I do when I am playing a record is ride the pitch, and when I was watching him play I noticed he touched the platter and rode the pitch. But the thing is, when I am riding the pitch, it's never 100% beatmatched and I have to spend a lot of time on my decks just going up and down the thing so that it's synced, when all my friend does is ride the pitch a bit, adjust the speed by touching the vinyl and after that he spends the rest of his time on the mixer

What's frustrating is that now that I am home I cannot seem to do it, and everytime I touch the vinyl I just fuck it all up. Is it possible to achieve 100% beatmatching by only riding the pitch or should I do both?

the vinyl? lol... or the spindle?

i do all 3. start off roughly mixing it with the pitch then maybe either touch the platter or ring your finger around the spindle in the middle of the vinyl. with a combination of all 3, you can't go wrong!

I ONLY TOUCH THE PLATTER TO SLOW DOWN, NEVER DO I SPEED UP A VINYL USING THE SPINDLE, I PITCH RIDE AND SYNC THE TUNES AS MUCH AS I CAN THEN WHEN IT GOES OUT SLIGHTLY WHICH IT WILL I WILL SLOW IT USING THE PLATTER AND ADJUST THE PITCH A SLIGHT FRACTION AND SO ON....

BEEN MIXING JUST UNDER A YEAR AND CAN CONFIDENTLY SAY IVE STARTING MAKING PROGRESS WITH MIXING AS I CAN NOW MIX TO A GOOD LEVEL:):):)

This. I only ride the pitch, no touching the record or platter. You don't have to touch the record just because some says you do

Rubs dont listen to what he says

just use the pitch man. its really perhaps the only way to learn to beatmatch perfectly.

slight touches of the platter are ok though not theirs any rules you have to mix by.

but generally just use the pitch bro, thats what its there for

    peace (y)

I see what your saying, but right now off the top the way I see it working out best is to just continue to see touch or ride the pitch.. the more you touch the platter you will then realize how soft you need to touch or what you need to do? IDK just speaking out loud.. I haven't been on the decks for a min

i try n pitch ride but it jus seems too slow, if ya wanna pull off fast mixes. i normally give my record a push, or a rub the platter.

touching the platter is a bad habbit! like picking ur nose! dont get me wrong, i do it all the time (both platter touching and picking winners from me nostrils) i know perhaps i shouldn't. my theroy is if u have to touch the platter to speed it up or slow it down then the pitch is out! practice practice practice is the way forward!

pitch chasing is the way forward, when your shifting the pitch to get the beats in sync you can get a better feel for the speed of the two tracks because its a more gradual speed up or slow down. I think that's the best way to try and master beat matching.
