Some people's behaviour at raves...Rant...

People who know me behind the scenes know there's some things that really wind me up, and after last night I have to get some stuff off my chest and explain a few things...

Firstly people trying to nick bits of decor, as 'souvenirs'...

This has happened plenty of times and stuff has been nicked. That's our time, effort, money and ideas and I'm not going let it walk out thru the door. (Effort put in, to put on what recognised as one of the best looking dnb events in the country).

I take it very personally, the same as if someone was to walk into my house and try to walk out with any of the contents...

I personally don't mind people taking next event posters or dj set time papers, those are souvenirs...

But 5m x 2m backdrops, that's not a souvenir, neither are the hanging stencilled disks or the meshes that we hang when we do lasers. The best of which (which was handpainted in about 6 layers) got trashed by someone trying to pull it down as a 'souvenir'.

(Of course I'm gonna defend what's ours...)

Secondly is random people getting up on stage and the podiums and dancing...

We've had plenty of equipment broken and damaged by people falling about on stage, bulbs broken in lights, lighting displays made inoperable by people trippingover cables (which might not be fixable during 'showtime'), lazers wrecked by coats being tucked beside them, backdrops pulled down, monitors speakers being knocked over, even that girl who fell on the decks a few months backs.

Also we've had fireworks and effects set up which we've been unable to use cos of people on the stage. If we don't keep it strict, we get invaded, and that's not safe, not good for the dj, or for anyone else.

It takes more work than most people would ever know to organise events every month, and decor / stuff getting stolen for 'souvenirs' and uninvited random people who don't respect the stage space seriously fuck me off!

It costs us money too...

Rant over. That's what makes me angry!

a little bit of R.E.S.P.E.C.T. (y)

That Police Line Do Not Cross -type tape is pretty cheap, you can get it from most hardware stores or even prank material shops. the few times i've been contributing to organizing an event, we've made just simple obstacles to prevent acces. The tape thing works when you use it properly (dont be shy, all of it, no-one's going to cross it.

I'm also pissed off about peeps trying to get into the back room... one time a posse of sensiheads smelled ganja coming out of there and stormed the place. Lucky for us, we had a few large caliber mates back there too. (i know it ain't good to smoke a lot in back rooms in general, but if the DJ needs it, he can have it!!)

If only it were that easy, we've got proper metal crowd barriers, but it's pretty rammed and people will climb over or squeeze round the sides.

We have come pretty close to stage invasions now and again, all good natured, just outta control...

Hear you on the not-wanting-people-to-nick-large-souvenirs - but even so, when I was at the launch party for the Hospital 10 years UK tour (at Medicine Bar, Brum) I sooooooooooooo wanted to steal their huge banner they had on the front of the building... If I'd had a little more beer in me I might've even tried to, but would've felt bad forever afterwards because I know how much they cost to get made.

It's the general nature of people - you always want to steal something as a memento, why do you think drunken students such as myself steal the largest roadsigns they can haul back to proudly present as student trophies? Alpha male student bizniss agwan ;) I did take a Pendulum forthcoming poster though, that's next to my lightswitch in my room. :)

Mainly I can, at least from my standpoint, students nick stuff to hide the ugliness of their student digs.

Feeling sorry for ya Daniel, I know how much work you guys put into the decor at Breakneck (n)

While it's not much of a condolence, at least you know what you're doing is 'effing wicked! But you probably knew that already from all the positive comments.

The thing is, that when people try and nick stuff, it's usually someone flyering who see's them and has to stop it.

It's not the best position to be in...

They're are usually pissed and lairy, and when they repeatedly lie to my face (and I quote) "SDM said I could take it", I get angry.

I got close to losing it on Friday night, and I don't like feeling like that. I said some harsh words in the heat of an argument with someone trying to nick said 'souvenir', which I do regret saying. (Cos I'm not like that).

(But don't try stealing Breakneck decor and I'll be nice as pie!)

Sometimes harsh words are what's needed (...and two beefy mates to stand behind you and leer at the offender) - or you could detain offenders until they cough up the cash for replacements. Sure, you can take that 6x4 banner - just pay so we can get a new one. Job's a good un!

I must make it to a brknk event sometime, they sound wicked :D

WTF? Just for future reference, I do not authorise any souvenirs at all! Including posters or time sheets! Jeez, it's not even mine to give away in the first place!

Bastards! (n)

Somebody took my wicked camo jacket as a souvenir from a Peshay warmup gig last Saturday.

Thing is, its almost unique and I got the word that he was at the big London Elektricity party round the corner.

Went there, took it off him, got him busted and raved :)

I go out of my head when fuckers take or ruin my stuff so I can well understand your senitment.

I know you wouldn't authorise any souvenir taking Stu.

That's why I got so wound up when someone's standing in front of me, repeatedly saying 'SDM said I could take it'.
I'm saying 'no he didn't put it down'.

This can only go on for so long before it starts to escalate...

On Friday night, even his mates were saying 'Just admit, you pulled it down from the ceiling, let it go'

If you're nicking summat and you get stopped, at least have the decency to hand it over...

Don't start lying to me and getting lairy!

Cos I will defend myself / retaliate verbally, and that's what I don't want to get involved in...

That's all I wanna say on it, cos otherwise I had a highly enjoyable night.

Yeah man, I wasn't really aiming that at you, more for anyone reading this thread who might consider saying I'd said it was Ok.

Nice one :)

Last word from me...Promise.

It's not even about paying the financial cost of the stuff.

We make all the decor ourselves, so there's paint, materials bought and found, stencils, and hours / days of work involved.

Offering me £5 for something's an insult. That's doesn't cover 1 can of spray, when we've used 4 on the thing that's you're trying to walk out with.

The big backdrops cost £30 in fabric each, over £20 in specialist UV paint, that I had to research, track down and travel across London for, and about a week (literally) of cutting stencils and applying multiple coats of paints, with said 2m x 5 m backdrop filling my living room floor.

Wanna buy one? Get a bank loan, cos you'll probably need it...

Mabye you should speak to Laura Ashleys about starting an offshoot new credible alternative to Interior Design :D I'd love one of those UV backdrops on my wall hehe.

Shy that people are trying to nab your decor, dont the bouncers see them?

To be fair to the bouncers they've got other things to worry about, like getting x many people to leave the venue safely.

They have stopped decor going on occasions, but the way I see it, it's not really their responsibility, it's Breakneck promoters'.

It's our stuff and I'm gonna step in, and stop it walking...

Not that much stuff had actually vanished, but only cos we've seen it on the way out, and stopped it from happening.

i'm sure most people from this thread will keep an eye out now and kick anyone stealing in the shins:nutkick:

I KNOW you're ready and willing to dish out the beatings!

I just wanna relax and enjoy the night, like everyone else, not act like some kind of eagle-eyed enforcer...

I want everyone to have a great time and go as mental as they wannado.

Just keep off the stage / MC podium...

And don't nick the decor / anything else!

:flowers:

Peace.(yn)

(Especially after the NYE madness...)
