To be honest, I had a coupon code from some gear I bought awhile back and decided to take the plunge and buy Ableton 8 Standard since they offered a free upgrade to 9. At first I was not a fan but the more I dove into the program the more I understood the reasoning of the GUI and the approach to song composition within Ableton...which I found to be quite inspiring and convinced me to pickup Suite. The idea of firing off your own bits and pieces creatively to record an arrangement really appealed to me. I also enjoy the creative freedom of mixing up clips (and easily creating clip variations) to create scenes on the fly.
One of the biggest selling points for me (aside from being able to link Traktor and Ableton) was the many great ways Ableton handles and manipulates MIDI creatively...something Logic knows nothing about. Right now I've been sketching song ideas, riffs and rough arrangements in Ableton and then export the stems to flesh them out in Logic. I have yet to learn how to rewire the two programs together–or whether or not that's what I want to. But it's something worth investigating.
To add, Ableton seamlessly integrates with my SLmkII MIDI keyboard as the team at Ableton built the Automap specs directly into Ableton–no need for Automap and it's 100% stable!
My biggest issue with Ableton is the handling of Send/Return/Aux. Msmith222 and I have such crazy routing with our instruments & drum kits that I find Logic's mixer GUI is much easier to accomplish this. At the same time, I'm quickly growing tired of waiting for Logic 9.5, Logic X, Logic Hyper Fighting Turbo Edition or whatever the fuck they're going to call it. I know that they're "hard at work" on the next version...however, my faith in seeing a substantial update sometime soon is rapidly dwindling.
Having said all that, Logic will be my go-to bitch (for now, lol), and Ableton will my mistress on the side.
