heya, im having problems finding good sounding individual snare hit. im trying to layer up with some breaks and some separate drum hits. ive found a half decent kick but having real problems finding a good snare. dus anyone have a link with any good sounds? cheers
yeh me 2 Im lookin 4 a nice subfocussy type beat or advice on how to make 1. do you have to compress it or what Im trying for a nice blunt "timewarp type of snare sound"
put some 100-150hz frequency on it and just keep layering and layering and layering, add a short shaker into the snare aswell, finger snaps and claps can work nicely too i usually have about 30 layers for my drum loops nowadays, 10 for kicks, 10 for snares and 10 for high frequency stuff like hi hats. lots of old 80's tunes have sick snares in so try and find some to sample, hope i was some help
thanks for that nutek, its sounding a lot better.another quickie, for your hats do you use a high pass on a break or just arange it all yourself? cheers
i usually take a break and take the bits i want and then rearrange them, although sometimes a break fits perfectly but i still add loads of yummy high pass to it, i find the latter can be very effective
Mate, if you looking to make Sub Focus beats then this months Computer Music Magazine is a must! TRUST! Its got a dvd tutorial from him about making his beats, making bass, and mixing down! ITS A MUST HAVE!!!
Also, you can't go wrong with Dave Carbons Loopmasters sample CD! Got some great individual samples!!!!!!!!!! Think its bout 25 buck tho?
is this the one by any chance? cant find anything bout drums on it but good vid none the less. cheers, f00f http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SK1ocGVDibg&feature=related
yeaaaahhh baby.... i got it i havent watched the sub focus vid on the new one.... but going by the walkthrough in the mag, i would say thats the video from the old cm subfocus thing all good though
oh and in re: samples...... no amount of tweaking will turn a shit snare into a good one finding a good sound to start is the key..... its not easy, i can go through hundereds of snares looking for a half decent one when making a beat check the sample post in my sig, loads of good free sample packs
You want a decent snare hit and boost it around 200hz. That gives it the fat punchy sound if thats what youre looking for.
10 kicks and 10 snares all layered up on top of each other?! thats way too much mate! its all about getting ur hands on some nice clean samples, hip hop kicks and snare work well for dnb too, as the saying goes you can't polish a turd, its all about getting your hands on good quality samples. u can make a good dnb beat with only one kick and one snare, really pump em up and then layer ur breaks (high pass works well to allow room for other beat elements), hihats, ghost hits etc etc and build that way unfortunately i have no links at the mo for what i see to be really good clean samples, i bought jungle warfare refill years ago and that has some half decent ones in there (although i've over used them, need to get my hands on more!)
Layerring is good as is finding good snares to begin with. New tune goin up on myspace soon give it a listen, cheers
