Shuffling Percussion...

I'm really feeling this shuffling style of percussion at :56. I have heard a similar type of style in a few dubstep tracks. However I'm having a tough time figuring out a) the samples utilized 2) the type of arrangement/pattern to get this sort of sound. If someone could shed some light on the style of percussion this is and some tips to steer me in the right direction it would be much appreciated. ;)

Isn't it obvious?

Not very helpful is it? Sounds to me like some highly processed vengeance style hats/pitched up snares. Try using a sampler and your keyboard so you can tap out the arrangement in real time. Also this will give you easy control on the velocity giving the percs a more human feel. Failing that drag the tune into your DAW and look at the waveform to see how hits are arranged. Hope that helps.

They're not the holy grail. Personally I never use them, I prefer other samples. A lot of them are highly processed for that main room drum sound. They're sonically good quality, just a bit obvious at times.

Playing with different sample velocities is key to this kind of shuffle sound IMO.. that could make the most basic of patterns sound really funky and shuffley.

why don't you actually start doing something with your daw, building up something, bounce it and post an example of what level you are and what are your actual limitations?
In that way you can then ask for advice on how to work for real on practic and specifically on your programming skills.

This asking general questions about how other artistes works is not going anywhere.
Is like watching porno movie and ask, to the next sitting person, how it's possible that the guy in the movie make the girl suirting...

How mum and dad they gave us birth???

The more you practice, the close you get to the G-spot of the lady!

Id also quite like to see where your at, youve asked a lot of questions and got a lot of good answers. if we can hear what sort of stuff your making we can attempt to offer more specific tips!

Kind of, thanks :)

i hear everyone speak of these vengeance packs like they are the holygrail.... r they worth an investment?

Absolutely. They are already processed and whatnot and need very little eq and compression. Personally I tend to use the cymbals if nothing else.

Just choose about 5 or 6 (no limit but thats a decent amount) different hat sounds that work nicely with each other then start placing them into the beat in different areas. It would be easier to explain for me if I could show you I guess but its just about placing multiple percussion sounds (hats for this sort of shuffle) in a sequence tha works well with each other. Also take full advantage of any loops you may have, get chopping them up!
