London’s DJ HYPE has been a fiercesome force writhing at the hub of drum and bass since its inception. For over a decade he’s been instrumental in making jungle massive, mangling the d’n’b/hardcore template into an electronic sound hard and funky enough to break bassbins the world over.
Initially learning the power of the dubplate through time on pirate radio stations he moved into studio production in the early 90s. Through working on hardcore releases for the Kickin’, Strictly Underground and Suburban Base he completely immersed himself in a nocturnal world brimming with big drums and fat bass.
The man has since turned his hand to everything. From building soundsystems, A+Ring and hosting his own Kiss 100 Radio shows to residencies at Fabric and establishing the esteemed Ganja and True Playaz imprints, Hype has been key in dragging the scene kicking and screaming out of the underground.
His True Playaz raves at Fabric are the stuff of d’n’b legend while his own Djing is viewed as the one of the best in the land. Every set is full of the freshest, most up to the minute cuts and chopped, scratched and funked by Hype’s dazzling skills as a dextechnician. The man always, always tears it up. Bassbins beware…
A SKILLZ is breakbeat stable Fingerlickin’s youthful party starter. He’s blazed a path through the more leftfield charters of digital largeness with a boombastic bag, heavy on funk and hip hop both as a DJ and a producer in his own right.
His ‘Trickatechnology’ long player (produced in cahoots with fellow beat breaker Krafty Kuts) saw him drawing on his roots in hip hop, collaborating with Kurtis Blow and Real Elements and subsequently raising the bar for albums chocka with block rocking party beats.
The following tour saw the duo take on sold out clubs armed with 4 decks and 4 CDJs, leaving many ravers worldwide astonished by their stupendous scratching and mixing ability and sheer dedication to ensuring venue roofs were torn right off.
Since then he’s continued to tour as a party player while putting together the ‘Export’ mix for Fingerlickin’ and providing Annie Mac with a mini mix voted the best by Radio 1 listeners, fending off stiff competition from the likes of Basement Jaxx, Mylo and the Scratch Perverts.
Glastonbury, Pacha (Ibiza), Chew the Fat and Fabric Live have all been left shaking by his antics while the rest of the summer sees him tearing it up at TDK Cross Central and the Electric Gardens. This is a proper one off as two of the best exponents of their genres go head to head to the very death. The floor will be rubble by the time these two have finished with it. Bring on the madness…
