Question for the "DJ's"

Just wondering if you guys have caught the plague that myself and my m8 have (and pretty much everyone else I know who is even half decent on the 1s & 2s).

Everytime I listen to a mix be it one of my own or someone elses I find I am listening to the mixing rather than the tunes. I spose it comes from being overly critical of my own stuff but I was wondering if any of you guys have suffered the same fate?
 
ya totally mate, but the dynamic mixing adds as apposed to listening to a tune by itself is crazy, because u can choose to do so many different things in so many different ways, and it'll change the way you listen to that song, thats why drum n bass is better that other genre's.

i always find that as im listening to a song, that im not really listening to that song specifically, but instead, all the songs which i think will go well with it are going through my head.

Yeah I keep catching myself thinking "Shoulda brought it in here instead" and "ohh Id have dropped such-and-such there" LoL. Only place I can really listen is at work cos I tend to zone out :)
 
agree! i used to record (years ago sort of ) my mixes in a bar i used to dj in and listen back and think that was awful or that was good but then listen back and think " well they danced and i didnt fuck up too bad"


Your just a critic of your own work which is a good thing just dont let it get the better of you.


as long as your mix aint as sloppy as jade goody's kebab then make your sure tune selection is original and boppin'!

ppl on this forum dont seem to be too fond of giving out tips, and ive only been mixing for 3-4 months but ill just say some of the stuff ive picked up (correct me if im wrong, dont just flame me) when im mixing im always looking at the song im playing (going to fade in to) when i glance over im lookin how long is left until the breakdown and my knowledge of that song will mean that i know how long the breakdown is, that way i can plan how i want to drop the next song in to it, whether it be a double drop (aw yeah) or i want it a phrase late, whether ill just switch to the breakdown or whatever seems a gd idea at the time. i find it really beneficial to always be paying attention to whats happening around u, and always to be thinking of what ur going to do next, that way ur never caught out, people can be lax when they do a set and not really try and wow, hopefully as i develop my style people will be able to see(hear) and think "this guy has really put thought in to what he's doing", well i hope at least, because i will be proud of it. best advice ever is KNOW UR TUNES, i still get caught out sometimes! dunno why but i think finding the three has a 3 phrase intro, i know its 2, but 3 is just programmed in to me, need to beat it out.

i think that's part of the whole fun/joy/experience of it.

some djs i just like hearing 'play songs' a lá hazard, logan d, clipz (to an extent) - high impact to the point mixing. just smashing it tune wise

but then i really enjoy the long mix n' blends of andy c, friction, cyantfic. still smashing it, but with the little tricks they throw in, and the techniques they use. it makes for a more exciting, fulfilling experience.

reading that back, i don't know if it makes much sense. but i know what i mean :teeth:
 
the best advice i can probably give out to someone who aint beeen mixing long is just get to know ur vinyls well.

so much easier to mix when u know exactly what is going to happen next in the tune.
 
its the same when u specialise in anything. for me i cant just "watch" a piece of theatre anymore without taking every detail apart....gonna start mixing soon...my bf's gonan teach me. lets see how it goes n il keep u all updated
