    ------------------------

    PPR009 - LUCAS HART - "ALLEY DWELLER"

PPR009A: "Alley Dweller (Vocal Mix)" by Lucas Hart
PPR009B: "Alley Dweller (Dub Mix)" by Lucas Hart

Pure Phunk has done more then it's share of exposing new, Canadian talent to the breaks world. We've brought you Sole Claw, Influenza, Dislexik, and most recently the over-talented Spence. For this release, we're pillaging the west coast of Canada once again with our latest find: Lucas Hart.

Lucas is a 20-year-old student that has come out of nowhere... Literally! Working out of Nelson British Columbia in the gorgeous BC interior, Lucas has delivered us an astonishing first release. "Alley Dweller" is a tune that defines the term 'party rocking'.

We've field tested this tune on many dance floors and without a word of a lie, amongst sets of tunes consisting of unreleased big name material, the only tune to set the floor on fire and got every trainspotter running to the booth was this one. Needless to say we signed it instantly.

Rough beats and catchy hooks combined with a fun party vocal complement the not-too-devastating bassline perfectly. For those not into vocals, the dub mix strips out the bulk of the vocal, leaving the hook and the killer beats to speak for themselves.

This is the first release for Pure Phunk in 2006 and is representative of the new direction we have in store for the future. The bar has been raised, and we're committed to delivering only the best party rocking music on vinyl!

    HERE'S WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:

    * Krafty Kuts (Finger Lickin', UK): "A good solid breaks number."
    * Atomic Hooligan (Botchit, Menu Music UK): "Dancefloor banging business!"
    * Deekline (Botchit, Southern Fried): "Love the track! Been playing it out. Like the hiphop edge on it."
    * Aquasky (Passenger, UK): "Very Creative. The Dub mix works well!"
    * DJ Icey (Zone Records, USA): "Love the Vocal Mix the best!!"
    * Skool Of Thought (Supercharged, UK): "Digging the tune, playing the Dub version. Big up!"
    * Bassbin Twins: "The dub mix is the one - bassline business and the halftime breakdown = Yes"

    PPR008 - SPENCE - "HYPERION"

PPR008A: "Hyperion (Skool Of Thought Mix)" by Spence
    PPR008B: "Hyperion" by Spence

The 8th release from Pure Phunk is set to make some serious waves for relative newcomer Spence. Spence produces how he plays: deep and techy. 'Hyperion' is a smooth, techy breaks journey. Tight percussion and rolling bass will make this tune an essential tool for all breaks DJ's.

On the flipside is the truly monsterous Skool Of Thought remix. Keeping close to the original, Skool Of Thought beef's up the bassline and chops up the drums to produce what is being reffered to as 'Skool Of Thought's best remix to date!'

    WHO IS SPENCE?

Spence's skills on the Technics have gained him undeniable respect as one of Canada's top Breakbeat DJs. Now with emerging prowess as a producer and saxophonist, he is rapidly becoming a certifiable triple threat in the modern music scene.

Andrew Spence was born in New Westminster BC, Canada. He took piano lessons until the age of 13 then switched his focus to the saxophone. Showing natural musical ability, he excelled on the horn and earned awards at national levels for his soloing. In 1988, young Spence picked up his first set of decks and began spinning hip-hop and R&B at house and hall parties. After high school, he drifted away from the saxophone and sold his decks and wax.

The silence didn't last long as Drew found himself hanging around in Vancouver's underground electronic music scene. 1994 rolled around and he was back spinning, only now he was blending up rude electronic rhythms, most notably Breakbeats. In a short time he was playing around Vancouver's warehouse circuit as DJ Slim, a name that fit his slender physique and freestyle mixing technique. Slim quickly became a staple in the electronic music underground by amazing party-goers across Canada and the western U.S. with his deep mixes and furious scratching. For obvious reasons, he has long since put the DJ Slim moniker to rest and is now billed simply as SPENCE. He remains notorious for delivering intensely skilled DJ performances that shock trainspotters and fellow DJs alike.

In early 2001, Andrew picked up a saxophone for the first time in 9 years and the reunion has been prolific. He quickly acquired a mic rig and introduced live saxophone into his DJ sets. The result is a stunning performance by a veteran turntable technician and gifted instrumentalist. In the past 4 years Spence has elevated his musicianship through private study, performance, experimentation, and university level scholastics. His sax stylings have been featured on Vancouver house labels Leaf and Village, as well as appearing on the legendary Rennie Pilgrem's album 'Pilgremage' on the world's biggest breaks label, TCR (www.tcr.uk.com)

Currently, Spence is currently signed as a producer to Toronto's Pure Phunk Recordings (www.purephunk.com). He spins for local Breaks squad, Twenty Hz, among others and is considered a venerable DJ talent from coast to coast and abroad. He plays sax with Vancouver's favorite funk machine, Five Alarm Funk (www.fivealarmfunk.com) as well as with many other acoustic and electric groups. Drew is also finishing his Jazz Studies diploma at Capilano College in North Vancouver. His future focus will remain on composition, production, and performance in both the electronic and acoustic realms.

    HERE'S WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:

Urb Magazine (USA) - "Andrew Spence is yet another promising Canadian signing for Pure Phunk. His solo debut will be big with fans of early work from Precision Cuts, Chris Carter, and Rennie Pilgrem with its crisp beats and melodic synths. On the flip, Skool of Thought reworks the track into a peak time bass-laden nu skool electro banger with edits and fills-a-plenty."

Rinse Magazine (CAN) - "Spence is without a doubt the most talented breaks DJ/Musician in Canada. His live sets consist of DMC level scratching and the tightest mixing, all while playing a live sax. This is his first release as a solo artist and it will put him on the map without a doubt. Deep and smooth with tight drum programming and a deep bassline. On the flipside, Skool Of Thought reworks the tune into a dancefloor smasher! Referred to by many as the best Skool of Thought remix to date, this tune kills them every time with it's hard hitting beats and vicious bassline."

    PPR007 - INFLUENZA - "FEEL IT EP"

    PPR007A: "Feel It" by Influenza
    PPR007B1: "Distant Future" by Influenza
    PPR007B2: "Ear Shot" by Influenza

The Pure Phunk Recordings camp is back in action, with a new record forthcoming in the month of June. The label has been a driving force behind the Canadian breakbeat sound, putting it on the map among the long-reigning U.K. giants. It has been a great run for the young label, with releases finding favor among magazine critics and being spun by who's who list of the breaks world, including: Icey, Plump DJ's, Aquasky, Soul Of Man, Atomic Hooligan, Simply Jeff, Jay Cunning and more.

Influenza is slated to release their new record Feel It on June 13th. The dark and bass-heavy tune combines an eerie vocal with a driven beat. The flipside includes two additional tracks: Ear Shot and Distant Future. Ear Shot is another bass burner with a melodic flow to it and Distant Future is an ethereal tune with a deep atmospheric feel.

The Vancouver duo of Oddmud and Psidream have accomplished a lot this year, including being the first Canadians to play Breakspoll at Fabric (London) and were voted to ranks of #19 as producers and #24 as DJs worldwide! This all comes on the heels of their previous successful release Prozac Nation, which found wide acclaim as both the original and in its remix by Krafty Kuts. Influenza's sound continues to progress with contagious drums and basslines.

    HERE'S WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:

Urb Magazine (USA) - "This three track EP showcases the Canadian duo's versatility with a bit of tech, bassline, and progressive breaks. Feel It is a DnB-influenced bassline rocker while Ear Shot and Distant Future are more rooted in melodic tech breaks. Great stuff."

Rinse Magazine (CAN) - "For their latest release, Influenza shows their diversity with a stunning 3 Track EP. The A Side "Feel It" is an absolute bassline monster unlike any on vinyl to date! An eerie vocal and some tight drum patterns all brought to a head with devastating bassline. The first track on the flip is "Distant Future", a deep and melodic tune with a great vocal hook and some really nice progression. "Ear Shot" is a slightly more melodic tune with some excellent percussion and basslines that will make people move at the right time and place."

WOMP003 - MYAGI - "BRING ME ALL YOUR BEER & WOMEN"

WOMP003A: "Bring Me All your Beer & Women (Scissorkicks Mix) " by Myagi
WOMP003B: "Bring Me All your Beer & Women (Original Mix)" by Myagi

Canada's forefront breaks producer, Myagi, is slated to release Bring Me All Your Beer & Women on June 20th.

The A-side is a Scissorkicks remix with the original version appearing as a strong B-side. This is the last tune from Scissorkicks before retiring. The remix has a bass-heavy, acid-saturated feel combined with a hard break and congas/bongos that come in almost subliminally.

The B-side original version blends a fun vocal sample with a nasty bassline culminating into a strong party tune. It was called "one of Myagi's finest works" by URB Magazine, which is quite the claim seeing how he consistently cuts top-quality, well-received vinyl. He was also recently a guest breakbeat reviewer for URB Magazine.

Expect to hear more from him very soon as he continues to dominate the scene.

"Booty banging goodness all the way! Tough and funky! Right up my street. Will be caining it!" - Atomic Hooligan
