Pioneer CDJ BPM Counters

Hey guys - just wondering if Pioneer's CDJ BPM counters are acually reliable, or if they tend to be inaccurate like Traktor a lot of the time?

No not really man, Bpm counters might give you a rough idea but just because it says 174 on both decks doesn't mean they will both be sitting pretty. Use your ears not your eyes.

This. Relying on bpm counters sets back your progression so much. I talk from experience.

as others have said, you can move the pitch up and down and the bpm wont change on the reading anyway. so it may be within a% or so but itd still be wrong. so use ears innit

Definitely dont use them, best idea is to stick some black electric tape over them as they are pointless!

haha nice one guys, glad to have that cleared up. never used them before, was just interested to see how similar they are to controllers that use Traktor etc. So the BPM doesn't change on the counter when you move the slider?

it does but not with any accuracy. for instance you could have two tunes both at 174 bpm, you could have one tune at 0% on the pitch and the other at 0.3% and it would read 174 bpm on both. so it doesn't really work for beatmatching

Its a nice little check, beatmatch it. Then look up and see that they are pretty much matching. Always nice to see,
But to be honest I wouldnt look at them at all. If you're learning, covering them up is always an option. To stop you looking if your tempted. You wont really learn to beatmatch quickly and tightly if you rely on them.

ok thanks. anyone know what the difference is between "vinyl" and "CDJ" jog modes?

When in vinyl mode you can scratch with the platter, pressing on it will stop the track. Take it off and the whole platter works the pitch bend.
