Photek biog

With his economical, static approach and a high level of abstraction, Rupert Parkes, aka Photek, has summed up the direction of, arguably, the most creative dance music of the '90s in its most eloquent form. His high production quality and intricately programmed drum sounds and patterns lead him to be known as the 'Master of Beats'

Early 90s work produced as Origination and Studio Pressure were released on labels such as Certificate 18 before Rupert launched Photek Records in 1994. The 6 releases on the label pricked up the ears of influential Dj's such as Goldie, Kemistry & Storm and LTJ Bukem, which in turn, lead to Rupert releasing several 12"s for Bukems "Good Looking" imprint. Remix work also came flooding in from the likes of Attica Blues, Therapy, Dr.Octagon and later Bjork, David Bowie and Everything But The Girl. Virgin formed the subsidiary label Science purely for Ruperts work with "The Hidden Camera EP", "Ni-Ten-Ichi-Ryu" 12" and legendary "Modus Operandi" LP in 1998. The"Form & Function" LP followed a year later, a collecting early singles and remix work.

The "Solaris" LP was released in 2000 and mixed old school house sounds, drum n bass and more cinematic material. Over the years, he has sporadically released material on his own Photek Productions imprint with the huge "Bleeps Tune" in 1999 and he recently returned to focus on the label. In 2002 he released the huge "The End" (featuring Robert Owens) and "Miracle"/"What I Need" to keep the label fresh in the minds of the drum n bass fraternity before unleashing the mighty "Sidewinder" earlier this year.

Photek will be performing a DJ set at LiveVEvil and this is sure to be the event of the year, a legend and innovator in the truest sense of the word making this exclusive Scottish performance an essential date in the diary of anyone with even a passing interest in innovative dance music
