When making a track, each individual sound doesn't peak and isn't really near peaking level but then when i play everything together sometimes the master peaks like crazy. I over come this by turning the master down out of peak level then bounce it before doing any sort of mastering to it.

Does it matter that the master level peaks and i turn it down?

Do other peeps do this? What be your views?

in fruity i use a soft clipper on the master, adjust the threshold till it sits right.
just turn it down tho mate. stereos come with a volume knob so the listener controls the volume. I make my tracks at full volume tho, coz i want them on my ipod which has a limited volume.

ez mate, what program do you use? I used to get this all the time when I was producing on ol Reason 2, nowadays I'm on R4 and the deault mastering suite has a limiter assigned that helps avoid this, although I reckon the main reason you're getting the clipping is because your mixdown probably needs a lot of EQ work, when u have a lot of sounds fighting for the same frequencies (clashes basically) there's not enough headroom for them all and u just end up with it red lining, its easy to just turn the master down but what u wanna do is (as time consuming and a pain in the arse as it is, its essential) look at your individual elements and eq em so everything sits where it should in the spectrum.

some basic things that helped me avoid this in the past are paying particular attention to EQ on drums (cut out the unnecassary low ends on ur breaks, save the lower frequencies for your kick and sub as the sub in particular takes up a lot of head room)

hope it helps! peace :D

cheers boys, much appreciated!!! I use logic 8.

Ketz, do you know any good frequency analyzers worth investing in cos i don't have on and im guessing if i need to start playing around with the EQs i need a good frequency analyzer. Any suggestions?

frequency analyser.....

i think frequency analysers and spectral analysers are the same thing

i was right then. I didn't like that inspector one, it was pretty small and couldn't really look at frequencies properly.

its a good tool but yeah the screen is pretty small

i have heard that the commercial version of inpector... inspector xl is meant to be better

i use waves paz analyser personally, cant fault it

Like someone said it will just be ur eqs, got some moulded together somewhere easily fixable.

Failing that yeah turn it down a bit

When using the limiter in reason be careful, cos it can really suck the life outts shit, especially snares

Yeah I have the exact same problem.
I use Cubase.
All my tracks have been EQd yet on the master i still have it clipping.
Even though it sounds perfectly fine!
I usually just bounce it anyway.
I may just turn down the volume on the master?

Same as mate!! Hoorar!

ez Mattix just saw ur reply lol! soz man, did u check my other thread? - think its the same inspector u guys are chattin bout.... yeah man I do use my ears still as unprofessional as it is, need to move away from that eventually! :D

@ Zeal yes mate I defo see where ur coming from, tbh at the moment I don't master most my own tracks so usually i bypass all the master effects on Reason and get it beefed up by a few peeps I know who are more specialised in that area, for me whats most important is getting the overall mixdown right, i leave the boosting of sound and final touches for my peeps to help out on (its lazy yes i know but these guys are kind enough to acheive much better results than i am currently capable of!) - but yes i had that prob on my snare that i sneakily found a way around lol

peace
