would sidechaining and EQ be a bit like using a dynamic EQ?
Also couldn't you put an EQ before the compressor on a send so it reacts to a specific frequency range?

i've done this before but it didn't work out as nice as the examples on the website

Sometimes I'll run the FL Limiter in parallel on my drum bus, set the threshold of the noise-gate high enough so that only the transients are coming through with a real tight release so it's just those peaks. This creates a pretty effective, but ghetto, transient shaper.

Never tried. In fact, I guess I'm so simple-minded that I couldn't figure out how to sidechain an EQ.

Better off than me @tm; I don't even know what the fuck side-chaining is really for. I know the basics in it for keeping say a sub-bass and a kick from having their frequencies interfere w/ the other, but that's it.

I sidechain a lot. When a kick hits, i'll duck a specific frequency in response to the kick, and the same for a snare. I'll reduce the chorus dry/wet when the hi hats hit, I'll sidechain a hole through the mix when i have a crash, and so on.
