This week’s scheduled move-in for the Olympic athletes’ village in Brazil fell flat, as the Australian delegation refused to enter the facilities due to serious issues with plumbing and fire safety.

That’s according to the Sydney Morning Herald, which cites the AOCclaiming the Australian athletes arrived today intending to check into their rooms, only to find them “uninhabitable.” The Herald claims the Great Britain and New Zealand delegations found themselves in the same spot upon arrival this weekend.

The Australia team will not move into the Olympic village for the time being because of problems including “blocked toilets, leaking pipes and exposed wiring”, the head of the country’s delegation, Kitty Chiller, said on Sunday. Chiller said she had raised concerns on a daily basis with the organisers and the International Olympic Committee, and was “pushing hard for a solution”.

Australian Olympic Committee staff had been due to move into the village on 21 July but have instead been living in nearby hotels. Chiller said that for those coming in the next three days alternative accommodation has been arranged.

Extra maintenance staff and more than 1,000 cleaners have been engaged to help fix the problems and clean the village and Chiller said later on Sunday that she was “reasonably confident” Australian athletes would be able to move into the village by Wednesday.

“We’re having plumbing problems, we’ve got leaking pipes,” said Mike Tancred, the spokesman for the Australia team. “We’ve got electrical problems. We’ve got cleaning problems. We’ve got lighting problems in some of the stairwells. We did a stress test on Saturday, turned on the taps and flushed the toilets, and water came flooding down the walls.”

Goldfeld, now 48, loves sports, especially sailing, and was eager to watch some of the events from his houseboat at a picturesque marina on the bay.

With the Brazilian economy booming and opportunities seeming endless, he thought the arrival of the Games would spark a long-needed push to clean up a bay that is as unpleasant to the nose as it is picturesque to the eye.

Cracklands: Where drug abuse meets the Olympics

“It smelled like (expletive) because it was full of (expletive),” Goldfeld told USA TODAY Sports. “I thought this was a chance to do something for the legacy. I don’t believe most of what we hear from the politicians, but I expected something would be done with the Olympics coming.”

Seven years later and with the start of the Olympics less than two weeks away, Goldfeld has discovered that, just as (expletive) happened then, (expletive) happens now. Tons of raw sewage are pumped into the bay each day. A giant pipe running from downtown churns human waste into the marina at certain times each day. Rats roam around in the waste. The stench makes uninitiated visitors feel like vomiting or fainting.

Dude, I've been dodging bullets since I was born. And it's like 33 years now. I escaped from kidnappers 5 to 6 times, 3 of them when I was 2yo.

Just a sidenote: the company that was responsible for the olympic village is the main company behind our own Lava-Jato scheme of corruption that you guys read about.

I think you discovered the next great Disney movie. It's like Rio but instead of parrots, the main star is a bunch of cunning two year olds led by their leader. Juan Poquito.

Didn't see your question back then, jmz: people are using the flame passing events as a way to protest. It is basically people wanting Dilma Rouseff back as president, others saying she must be definitely taken out. And that's it.

I wonder if anyone would be smart enough to fart on the flame, though.

Bus full of Chinese basketball reporters caught in roadside gunfight on the way to Olympic Village in Rio
    [IMG]

The 2016 Summer Olympics are scheduled to begin today, but for some it has already began with a bang.

Upon their arrival in Rio, a bus full of Chinese basketball reporters was caught in a roadside gunfight. Six locals were killed in the exchange, but no Chinese casualties have been reported.

Initially, the Chinese-language Basketball Magazineposted on Weibo that Chinese national basketball team players had been caught near the flurry of bullets, where they would have presumably suffered from flashbacks to their two exhibition matchesagainst Team USA last month.

However, Basketball Magazine later corrected this report. Upon arriving at the Rio airport, players and reporters boarded different buses headed for the Olympic Village. The bus full of basketball players made it there without incident, while the one full of reporters got held up about 2km away from the airport.

The magazine has posted some photos of the shoot-out on Weibo:

Chinese hurdler Shi Dongpeng received a less dangerous, but more bizarre greeting in Rio earlier this week. Upon arriving at his hotel, Shi was vomited on by one Brazilian man, while an accomplice made off with his luggage.

Elsewhere in Rio, a Russian official, and reportedly a master of jiu-jitsu, snatched away a robber's gun and shot him dead in the street, according to police. Russia's embassy in Rio has denied the reports.

Looks like it's shaping up to be an interesting next few weeks.
