Let me ask something here, as I really don't know about it: isn't a cultural trait of Yemen people to have this kind of arranged marriage?
It's a Middle East/Asian (like India and shit) thing, not limited to Yemen
Pretty deep for a 11year old.
Ok, so... must we be astonished by something that are culturally inherent to that country?
If it is morally repugnant, yes

Ok, let's get this straight: this is a case of a arranged marriage that went wrong because the girl refused to follow her family traditions, or a case of forced marriage? This wasn't clear to me, as I don't know if arranged marriage is a tradition in Yemen.
Might be called an arranged marriage but it will have been a forced marriage, honor killings aren't unheard of in this part of the world.
Also, she is 11
There is no minimum age for marriage in the Quran although traditionally marriages are not consumated until the bride starts her periods ie reaches sexual maturity (womenhood for cultures with low life expectancy). From what I can gather the opinion of the groom is always sought but the bride is expected to follow her father's wishes (the balance being he should have her best interests at heart). Obviously as a small child she would have been under strong pressure to go along with the whole thing (they often end up running away or being divorced for being difficult to manage).
Some people will try and say that these are tribal customs not religious ones, the problem with that being the Quran was a product of seventh century bedouin culture so the two are not exclusive. The prophet Mohammed married Aisha when she was 'very small' ie 6/7 and consummated the marriage when she reached puberty (uncharitably put by some at 9 but more likely 13). He is the 'most perfect example' so nothing he did could be classed as morally wrong, which explains the whole clash of cultures when those cultures are exposed to the west and womens/human rights etc. So it's fine for Saudi clerics etc to discuss marrying 9 year olds with a solemn face but the rest of the Islamic world has moved on a bit and generally expects a girl to be 15/18 before being married off (copying western standards).
Bit of a problem here between old and new IMO.
Well, in that case we can't say this would be a arranged or forced marriage, because we only have her version of the story (supported by her uncle)?
....what? clearly she didnt want to get married...so its forced...
Just saying..Yemen ranks 169th in the "Freedom of Press Ranking" in 2013..of 179 nations.
