Throughout the ‘90s British culture was saturated by many things, but most teenagers from that era will remember these two very prominently; the rise of jungle/drum & bass and the life story of Howard Marks, first printed in 1996.
Howard Marks is of course one of Britain’s most notorious smugglers. During the ‘80s Howard Marks had forty-three aliases and was responsible for importing most of the marijuana sold in the UK moving large quantities of hashish into Europe and America in the equipment of touring rock bands.
KAV, a former member of Happy Mondays was responsible for crafting a track to coincide with the release of Howard's biographical film ‘Mr Nice’ starring Rhys Ifans. Since creating the original KAV hooked up with UK drum & bass duo Northern Lights to bring the Howard Marks and drum & bass story to a dancefloor shattering conclusion.
‘Mr Nice’ features snippets of Howard Marks which are interlaced with clattering breakbeats and booming sub bass. While we’re sure Howard would approve of a late night after party session, for many this will be the soundtrack to what happens before they leave the club!
Label boss Steppa and his co-producer Kitcha provide an excellent AA side which harks back to the classic Formation Records era. Splicing in cheeky samples lifted from anthems of old and twisting them into something brand new, this one is just as fearsome on the dancefloor.
