Now that Mechanical Advantage is the ripe old age 1 year, we will be doing a review of our top 5 tunes from 2011! Encase you missed any of our releases; HNIC GPK will be doing a short review and giving some insight about the artist who produced the track!

First up is the honorable mention spot.

POX is a relatively unknown producer and from what I understand he likes it that way. He has certainly captured that classic Amen sound from the early 2000s but he adds his own twist from modern compatibility. This was Mechanical Advantage 1st EP and an unforeseen runaway success, I guess people are still craving the fundamental sounds of drum & bass. My favorite track was the Smoker. When any samples J Dilla it's for the best, the synths sound great and have a great use of space. For you crate diggers out there the intro (I think) uses a blue note records samples. All of the previous points and statements are a recipe for success. My second most played track was Versailles St. Blues. Great sounds, Wu Tang samples and probably the best use of the Darkest Light sample in a DNB tune.

If you have not heard this EP yet then give The Smoker and Versailles St. Blues a critical listen.

Stayed tuned for the rest of the top 5 from MAD!

The number 5 most popular release comes from the hardest working man in Drum & Bass, Aliman. Before I talk about the music, I want to comment on the art work. This is probably my favorite as well as most other people’s favorite art work. Who doesn’t like cereal boxes? This certainly conjures up “OMG I have to have that!!!” feeling of being a little kid. The person behind this art was Sherri from urbanrustique at gmail dot com. Now onto the music, I have no idea where Aliman gets his samples from or why he called this track The Super Market but it worked well. This is a very DJ friendly jump up tune, easy to mix in and out of. Great synths sounds and great synth rhythm make this an easy choice for any DJ. I even liked this track so much that I decided to remix it! ***COUGH***July 2nd, Aliman – The Super Market (GPK remix) ***COUGH***. The Horror was actually supposed to the highlighted track but this was before I had heard The Super Market. The Horror is very dark and murky, almost the opposite feeling but a great compliment to the flip side. This track did not get quite as much play from me but it is great for bring down your mix while still keeping it hype.

Thanks for listening and thanks for the support of the past year,

Stay tuned next week for the addition of the #4 spot!

Our 4th most popular release of 2011 was MAD003! This release was very special to me because I had a chance to work with one of my favorite producers and a DNB legend in general, Nightwalker. He has had close to 100 releases on just about every major DNB label. If you still aren’t convinced check google and rolldabeats.com. This tune got played a lot by me due to the fact of how nasty it is. My original version was ok but it was nowhere near as gross as this remix. I am not going to talk about the b side to much just because I think it is tacky to talk about my own track. I will say that I was happy with how I manipulated the vocal samples. They consisted of a confession of a pedophile and really weird clip of a martial arts demonstration. For the main synth sound I used something called Swarm Synth. In all honesty Creature would have never gotten a release if DJ Ra did not like it.

If you have not heard this release yet give the Monsters remix a listen!
Thanks for the support and be on the lookout next week for the #3 song.

Kiyos Revenge makes the 3rd most popular release of the Mechanical Advantage 2011 top 5! Random is the quickest way to some up how this release happened. I was contacted with a PM via Sound Cloud and *poof* the wheels were rolling. I know absolutely nothing about this producer, it even maybe 2 people. I digress. This release could have easily been on Tru Playaz or Front Line. Top production/mastering great synth sounds and easy to mix. I could not ask for more out of a release. Drop Dropping and Safety Word got equal plays from me. Funny thing… Safety Word is actually titled Safety World. In my haste I submitted the document with our proof reading it.

Thanks for the support and I will reveal the #2 next Friday! Have a great weekend.

I give you 2011’s second most popular release on Mechanical Advantage. This was Alimans first release on MAD and to be honest I did not know what it would bring. Thankfully, this release helped Aliman establish steady releases on MAD. Both of these tunes are great! I would put them in the detailed jump up category or whatever the opposite of minimal jump up would be. Great synth sounds, very easy to mix and proper loudness make both of these song a must have. Do you want to feel received the most play from me, I found that it mixed with Celery Man (MAD001) very well. If you have just discovered our label and missed this release then please give it a listen! P.S. Nate, half of the Sharkarms Brothers modified the art for this release. Who are the Sharkarm Brothers? Watch our facebook page over the next few weeks to find out!
