Matrix Live @ Glasgow 02-06-04

Sound quality is very poor (almost too poor for me to listen to) which is a real shame as I haven't got a good Matrix set on CD or MP3.

Get a program called cool edit pro 2.0. You can change the sound quality of mp3s and other things with this.

You are joking? Firstly, Cool edit doesn't exist anymore, its called Adobe Audition (I don't really expect anyone to actually know, or care about this).
But there is nothing you can do in cool edit anyway - mp3 is a lossy format, meaning once you have thrown the info away, you cannot get it back (if you could, it would be built into the decoder anyway, so cool edit would still be useless). The solution of course is to encode an mp3 that has only thrown away the inaudible sounds (to get close to this idea, it will of course require a higher bitrate and a well tweaked codec, such as LAME with the alt presets)..

I put this set into 320 bit rate with cool edit and it sounded fine. Download Cool Edit Pro from someone on DC++ or soulseek then it will exist. If you don't know how to use it then don't knock it.

I'm not knocking Cool Edit, I've had it for many years.

I don't believe you actually did this. Why? Because simply saving it with a bitrate of 320 will not improve the quality at all. Actually it will further reduce the quality, but the likelyhood of the difference being audible is low.

First of all, the recording has been lowpassed at ~11khz, secondly, it is encoded in stereo rather than joint stereo ,which reduces the efficiency of the encode and therefore further reducing the quality.

There is simply nothing cool edit can do to remove the artifacts and recover the non-existant content above ~11khz. If it were possible, then it would already be built into the decoder and it would still be pointless to save the file at a higher bitrate.

Now to prove to yourself that transcoding to 320 kbits/s does not improve the quality at all, I would suggest trying to ABX the two recordings with a program such as WinABX.

Phew.

Just bought (cough, cough) myself a copy of Cool Edit Pro and m gonna install and try it tonight.

Seems like you too might get into a fight over the question of audio quality so I don't wanna stir your pot but I think I agree with Mr StressTest, how can you improve the quality of a compressed audio file? To make a point the file is name is Lo-Fi!!

Will try tonight anyway. Got any tips for using CEP2?

Cheers guys.

You seem to make sense. You must be a sound engineer.
