Ez,

Anyone have any useful ideas to make drops sound more punchier and bigger ?

There is nothing worse than have a huge build up and the drop is disappointing.

Some things I have tried that seem to work

1. Volume automation
2. Adding subbass [Obvious]
3. Punchy Kick and Snare

Anything else..
Really struggling to get the drops sounding good

First make sure that your bass isnt sounding muddy, i find that really takes a lot of the impact out. using 2 or 3 different risers that fill the top half of the spectrum is also a good technique. Having drum rolls. a 1 or half a bar cut just before the drop is good for the impact. High pass filtering in the build up.

Thats all i can think of for now

Some kind of sample/rising fx that fades out into silence before the drop

some tips i picked up from various videos on production:
1. make intro 5-10% quieter than drop - get a bigger boom
2. Weird one this - if you are doing a fill before a drop - make that fill 2 or 3 bpm slower. Subtle difference but apparently makes you gagging for the drop (not tried this tbh). Or you can make the drop/main riff a few (not many <4 ) BPM faster than the rest of the track - aparently give more energy.
3. Try a tiny bit of silence just before the drop.
4 reverse cymbals /risers/ snare kik rolls etc

yeah not tried number 2.
