anyone ever done this before? obviously all landlords are different, but do you think it would be possible to leave my contract early if i told him i had lost my job and had to relocate? (lies) , i also know a couple of people interested in my place, would it help my cause if i said i would find him a new tenant?

definately depends on your landlord, but at the end of the day all they want is as much money as they can get... if you have someone willing to move in straight away, he shouldn't loose out so shouldn't have a problem with it... all you can do is ask, if he says no, well yuo'll just have to tough it out!
