Hey all,

I've been listening to a lot of chill drum and bass (liquid dnb) and dubstep recently (artists like Phaeleh) and i was wondering if anyone had any music theory tips for creating chill, atmospheric, spacey chords and melodies, a good example of the kind of melodies im referring to is this; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOwQnCjs594 (From a Distance - Phaeleh) and also another great example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mG2l7MvLdCk (Sightlines - Joe Syntax)

Any help on chord structure, notes and anything theory based would be EXTREMELY HELPFUL.

How coincidental, I was just about to start working on creating some nice chord progressions for liquid kind of tracks...
But I think what I would suggest for you is to just play around with individual chords (possibly ones with 7ths) until you find one that you like and you want to keep as the root of your entire track. When you're happy with that 1 chord setting the atmosphere then try and build a little chord loop which dances around about before coming back to the root chord (maybe start off with a 4 bar loop). Then just repeat the basis of the loop and adjust a couple of notes wherever it sounds nice to add a bit of variety, rinse and repeat til you have a nice 16 bar section.
As for the chords themselves I don't know, just see what sounds nice to you and take your time getting it give off a particular vibe rather than just following specific chords so that the music is coming from your own expression.

All I know is the use of 7th chords is quite common. Try out a standard piano sound or find yourself a nice pad :)
