Let's talk about dnb baby

Things I miss right now:
-Intelligent DnB (ICR, ASC before he went minimal, Camino Blu etc.)
-Hard DnB (Tech Itch, early Audio or Current Value....stuff that came out on Freak recs. I'm not talking about noisy/loud Neuro or Crossbreed)

For the former, there is plenty of good intelligent / atmospheric / drumfunk stuff on Subtle Audio, Repertoire, Arctic Music

Harder DnB that isn't noisy Neuro or Crossbreed stuff is in a pretty good place too atm, the Rupture stuff, Tech Itch, a lot of the Scientific Wax stuff, the Danger Chamber Digital compilations have had some incredible tunes on them that are every bit as good as the early Freak releases too IMO. That Blocks & Escher remix of Jubie & Goldie "The Prayer" is one of the best hard and heavy drum tracks to come out in years. Digital is putting out music at an absolutely alarming rate, Response is turning into a quality voice for the heavier rollers too, and Spirit is still at the top of his game. Also the 117 / DSCI4 output has all been excellent for quite some time.

i think basslines are pretty stale, and as the dude states, not too many anthems. i do enjoy what skankandbass is posting so far but the biggest problem i see is that drum patterns are extremely repetitive. this one comment from an ed rush tune sums it up perfectly

"I like how Drum N Bass before ~2009 had the drums really smashing through the tracks. Nowadays, they just sidechain everything and make the drums quiet so the whole track can be much louder. It has much more impact when the drums are louder."

the snares are annoying too, but one thing im looking forward to is future beat, or heavy half time dnb like mefjus - continuous vip. haven't found a lot more future beat since then my thoughts are

make drum beats more complex/layered/different
make recognizable unique tunes, too much stuff sounds the same and has a lack of innovation

this is what you're on about homie ;)

I wonder sometimes if I am listening to the drum and bass everyone else is on this fourm. Every year has it's ratio of good songs vs bad. Many of these songs are subjectivity good or bad to the listener, and most main stream drum and bass is quantitatively good.
Listen to what you like, the music will evolve, the question is will you? Personally, I love this music from 96 as much as 2016, and everywhere in between.
If you want a certain kind of dnb go and find it, it exist in mass quantities, just don't bring up a false nostalgia of days gone by.

Even though you are a GIGANTIC FAG I agree with you bruv :rasta:

Things I don't like:
-Hardly tracks with variation after the 2nd drop, just copy and paste
-Neuro getting more and more technical and loud, lacking groove and funk
-DnB tracks with radio edit length...just when you get into it it's already finished

Apart from that I still like it a lot, getting together one cd of DnB I really like per week is no problem.

this 100%

i fucking hate "neuro lack-there-of-funk"
maybe im biased cuz im a 90's junglist but gimmie a mad man rearranged amen over a simple 808 bline anyday over that shit

I think there's exciting stuff going on pretty much everwhere in DnB/Jungle right now. I will say that some sounds have certainly changed, and I do miss some of the vibes that you dont hear as much of any more. I really miss the neurofunk sound of 2005-2008, and can agree that a lot of the newer Neuro lacks the funk of that era, but plenty of it is still fun and enjoyable. Really the only thing that I cant get behind is Jump up and Pop drum and bass.
