laptop to computer filetransfer?

    hi!
    i have a big old file, 1.8 gb, on my girls laptop, and i need to get it onto my computer. she doesnt have a dvd burner but i have one of those cables that go into the network ports on both computers and then youre supposed to be able to transfer files between them somehow. does anyone know how to do this? i hear you have to assign ips and stuff. can anyone help?
