Fucking amazing film, beautifully made and as relevant as ever. Thomas Turgoose and Stephen Graham were both fantastic.
The story is basically about a young boy who gets taken under the wing by a nationist skinhead in 1983, the height of the BNP/NF's influence over the ever growing percentage of England's alienated youth. the boy is taken through a rite of passage from innocence to experience, and the stirred emotions in between. The ending was a bit abrupt but I thought that added to the grimy texture of the story.
If you live in the north of England, a lot of the story will ring true to home, Bury and Oldham are two good examples. Well worth watching (y)

Great film :2thumbs: Also check out 'Dead Man's Shoes' if you like this. Incredibly depressing but another brilliant film.

I'll be sure to check out Dead Man's Shoes, absolutely loved This Is England.

Stephen Graham is incredible in this. The subtlety of the performance is amazing, constantly moving from blind belief to subtle knowingness. You're never sure whether Combo outright believes what he preaches or whether it's a knowing, psychotic imbalance. That's what gives him the palpable air of danger.

It's this danger which utterly dominates the film from his first appearance, and culminates in what, to me, seemed the inevitable, brutal outcome. That scene is electric. The paradox of Combo's nature, and the larger chasm created through the social realities which Meadows constantly refers back to, are shown here. In that brilliant scene, you can see how Combo can be both Woody-like in his camaraderie through defiance, and totally unhinged through a lack of guidance and feeling outcasted. The effect is seen in close up, and lasts a matter of seconds, but it encapsulates the entire movie and, in some sense, many of the same stories and feelings you hear echoed of that time in England.
