vinyl is obviously not a portable medium, but CD's sound quality is not even a comparison, IMO. the best way to get good sound in a car is to record from vinyl to a WAV, throw that file in the iPod, and plug the iPod direct into your aftermarket head unit. it is the closest thing to vinyl in the car you will find. CD's lose quality in the reading from the laser, and if you direct plug in the iPod, and a WAV is playing, you are listening to the 'original' recording at the least loss of quality, from my experiences.
